There were two sacred moments for the shifter; first was when you went through your first shift. It was the time when you bonded with your wolf spirit, the first time you could feel their existence, the moment that defined you as the shifter, as you were blessed by the power of the Moon Goddess.

The second time was when you bonded with your mate during the marking process. It was the time when you were blessed with someone who would be with you forever. Someone, who was destined, and created only for you.

If the first was something between you and the Moon Goddess, then the second time was something between you and your soulmate. That was how it worked.

However, in Rania’s case, her first sacred moment was ruined because of the rejection. She had not yet shifted at that time, thus her wolf spirit was already very weak to begin with and a rejection was a strong damage for the soul.

It meant, you didn’t appreciate the blessing from the Moon Goddess, and the consequences of it could be very severed.

That was why, the second chance mate was very rare. It was almost unheard of.

And for Rania, she lost her wolf spirit, which meant she lost all of her ability as a shifter, she could be past as a normal human being at this point, but even so, she was given a second chance mate with the king.

“He rejected you, but you still want him.” Maximus narrowed his eyes, and saw the panic there.

“I don’t want him,” Rania replied, but less convincing because of how her words were trembling in her lips. She shook her head. “I don’t want him.”

“Liar.”

Despite the accusation, Maximus could see that Rania was not lying to him. She was scared, yes, but she was telling the truth.

“I don’t.” Rania lowered her eyes again, she couldn’t bear to see the king right in his eyes. His gaze was too much.

Maximus extended his hand, and gripped her chin again, but this time his movement was way gentler, as he rubbed his thumb against the scratch that he created on her skin.

Rania tensed up when he touched her again, she waited the pain, but to her surprise, Maximus pulled her toward him. He put his hand on the back of her head, while his fingers that gripped her chin tilted her head up, so he could kiss her.

The first thing that came to Rania’s mind was to push him away, she pressed both of her palms against his chest, but instead she was stunned to feel the beating of his heartbeat.

Suddenly, her palms felt like they were on fire. This was very intimate than anything that she and Caden had done.

And for a split second, Rania forgot about him, as she surrendered herself to the mercy of her mate. Maximus’s lips were cold, and Rania could feel whiskey in the kiss that they shared.

She returned the kiss clumsily, as he nibbled on her lower lip. The kiss was not hurting her.

But, when Maximus hand went down to her throat, Rania froze, her whole body tensed up, and Maximus could immediately sense it.

He stopped, and pulled away. His eyes bored into Rania’s pale face, and her rejection became more apparent when she pushed him out of instinct

“What is it? You don’t like it when I kissed you?” Maximus still had his hand on the back of her head, and they were very close.
