The room instantly erupted into chaos, everyone looking around at each other in confusion.
“What the hell just happened? Isn’t today their wedding anniversary? Why would she cancel?”
“Oh my God, are you that oblivious? Can’t you see Connor isn’t even here!”
“Some woman just showed up with a baby, and Connor literally ditched us to leave with her…”
“Wait, seriously? I’d heard rumors about Connor having a secret baby mama, but I thought it was just gossip!”
Listening to all the chatter and speculation, I lost what little patience I had left and got straight into my car.
Connor’s buddy Jake was at the party in his tux too. When he heard about the sudden cancellation, he immediately started blowing up Connor’s
phone.
“Dude, what the fuck is going on?”
“Bella just announced the whole thing’s off. Are you seriously bailing on your own eighth wedding anniversary?”
Connor was pacing the hospital corridor, waiting with the baby for the doctor.
His face went white when he heard this.
I’d barely gotten in my car when Connor called, sounding frantic.
“Bella, why did you cancel the dinner? I told you I’d be right back.”
“The media already knows about this–we promised at our wedding that we’d host an anniversary dinner every year. What’s it gonna look like if
we break tradition now?”
I stared out the window, completely detached.
The sky was getting dark, deep blue twilight settling in with an oppressive weight.
“Connor.”
I cut off his rambling with zero emotion in my voice.
“Did you honestly think the dinner could go on without you there?”
“Or maybe you’re actually happy that you left me there to humiliate myself in front of everyone?”
“I… I didn’t mean…” Connor’s voice was thick with guilt. “I wasn’t thinking that…”
But I was already done listening to his excuses.
I hung up on him.
Attorney Kim worked fast–he’d already drafted a preliminary version of the divorce papers and sent them to my email by the time I got home.
Just as I was about to open the attachment, my phone buzzed.
A message from my private investigator with a new video.
“Mrs. Grant, here’s the footage you requested from today’s surveillance.”
Seeing the video thumbnail, I felt nothing but unease.

Chapter 2
My hands were shaking as I hit play.
The hospital corridor came to life on my screen.
Sofia checked to make sure no one was watching, then grabbed Connor’s hand and pulled him into an empty patient room.
The moment the door closed behind them.
“Connor…”
“Seeing you two playing happy couple at the dinner tonight… it was killing me…”
Sofia backed him against the wall, looking all pitiful and vulnerable, then stood on her tiptoes to kiss him.
Connor barely hesitated before pulling her closer and kissing her even more passionately.
“Sofia, I love you…”
They were all over each other, eagerly kissing.
Connor was always this cool, composed gentleman in public.
But with Sofia, he completely lost control, showing his most primal, animalistic side.
Sofia melted into him like some fragile little bunny, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing him back with equal fervor.
A full minute passed before Connor finally came up for air.
“Sofia, we probably shouldn’t be doing this. The baby’s still with the doctor, and if the media catches us…”
Sofia’s eyes immediately filled with tears as she gazed at him.
“I’m sorry, I got carried away.”
“I forgot you belong to Bella now.”
She stepped back and started smoothing down his clothes.
Connor saw the resignation and sacrifice in her eyes, and couldn’t help but pull her back into his arms.
“I’m sorry I can’t give you everything you deserve…”
“Sofia, it’s our baby girl’s first birthday in three days. Let me throw her the most amazing party, okay?”
His eyes were full of longing as he peppered her face, nose, and lips with kisses.
“Then I can properly be with you…”
They smiled at each other and started making out again like they were the only people in the world.
I felt like someone was stabbing me in the chest. I squeezed my eyes shut and stopped the video.

Last time, Connor lied about a business trip and spent three days in a hotel with Sofia.
The time before that, he claimed he’d sprained his ankle and was staying at a friend’s place.
But my PI caught him getting into Sofia’s car instead.
I saw photos of them going at it everywhere–the bedroom, the balcony, the kitchen, the bathroom…
They weren’t married, but they were doing everything married couples do.
