Chapter 6
Time ticked by slowly.
I was getting tired of waiting for an answer and didn’t want to waste any more time.
Seeing me about to leave, the cold anger on Damon’s face immediately shifted to barely concealed panic.
For the first time in seven years together, he spoke to me in an apologetic tone:
“Reyna, don’t go yet. I know I’ve been too busy with work and neglected you these past few years, which is why you did something so foolish.”
“It’s okay, I won’t blame you. It’s just some penalty fees. As long as you agree to come back with me tomorrow morning, I’ll pretend none of this happened.”
“Rey, I really miss your cooking.”
Mentioning my cooking brought back a memory from two months ago. On a weekday morning, Damon suddenly texted asking me to make baked pork ribs.
That day, while suffering through period cramps, I rode my bike in the blazing sun to the nearest market to buy the freshest ribs, returning home with pale lips.
Racing against time to have a nutritious rib lunch ready before his lunch break.
When I arrived at his top–floor office, sweating and weak–legged, Damon and Sage were just walking out.
Seeing the lunch box in my hands, Sage snatched it excitedly, saying sweetly:
“Thanks for all your hard work, Reyna! My little baby loves your baked pork ribs the most. His second favorite is your braised beef!”
Little baby… was Sage’s pet dog that lived at the office.
Watching Sage feed my lunch to the dog right in front of me, all Damon said was:
“Sage and I are going out to eat. Remember to clean up after the dog finishes.”
With that memory fresh in my mind, I looked directly into his eyes and said clearly, unhurriedly:
“Damon, I’m not going back with you. Where my parents are–that’s my real home.”
“Also, I could never marry you. Because I don’t love you anymore.”
Damon was obviously stunned, then laughed angrily:
“You don’t love me anymore? We’ve been apart less than a week, and now you’re telling me you’ve already gotten over your feelings for me.”
“Reyna, don’t you think what you’re saying sounds ridiculous?”
I looked at him with disdain, not backing down:
“Damon, you’re the ridiculous one. You’re obviously sick of me, thinking I’m dispensable. You obviously favor Sage, like her so much you’d give her everything good in the world, Why won’t you just admit you cheated and fell for her?”
“Lying to yourself, playing both sides, wasting my youth day after day–do you think this is fun?”
After years together, Damon was used to my gentleness, consideration, and compliance.
Facing my logical, unprecedented assertiveness, his face went from red to green to very pale.
