Chapter 8
That slap wasn’t actually that hard, but Damon stood there like a statue, completely motionless.
He truly couldn’t understand how someone could just let go of seven years of daily affection and love.
Had I never actually loved him at all?
How could that be possible? Whether friends, colleagues, childhood buddies, or relatives–anyone who’d seen us together would say enviously that Reyna was completely head–over–heels for Damon.
Even he himself believed from the bottom of his heart that as long as he didn’t break up with me, I’d stay by his side forever.
Back then, he’d been so confident…
In a daze, Damon heard me asking Ethan with concern if his face was okay.
From the corner of his eye, he saw Ethan tenderly squeeze my palm, asking if my hand hurt.
Clenching his fists tightly, Damon’s eyes turned bloodshot as he shouted at me uncontrollably:
“Reyna! I’m the man you loved for seven years! How can you treat me like this for some outsider?!”
Hearing that, I actually laughed: “Damon, how many times do I have to say it before you understand–I, Reyna, don’t want you anymore.”
Seeing me take Ethan’s hand as if to leave, tears in Damon’s eyes finally began streaming down uncontrollably.
“Reyna!!!!”
Damon screamed my name with heartbreak, but his grip on my wrist was so gentle it gave me the ridiculous illusion that he treasured me.
Our eyes met. I’d never seen such a lost, devastated expression on Damon’s face.
He looked at my profile with utmost humility: “I apologize to you, Reyna. I shouldn’t have hit your friend. I’m sorry, Reyna, truly sorry. You can hit me or scold me however you want.”
“I didn’t mean to make you unhappy. I just wanted you to know that I really don’t love Sage…”
Just as he said this, Sage, with her swollen face, crawled to his feet in disbelief. But before she could cry out, Damon actually pressed her face to the ground with his foot and kicked her away without mercy.
“Reyna, I’ll fire Sage right now, or I’ll make her disappear forever, okay? I promise you, I’ll never hire any female assistants again, I’ll definitely…”
Sighing inwardly, I interrupted Damon: “You don’t need to tell me any of this. I really don’t care.”
Damon froze for half a second, then shook his head slightly, his voice trembling involuntarily:
“Reyna, you do care about me. I know you’re just disappointed in my past actions. But I know what I did wrong now. If you’ll just give me one chance, I really will change…”
“Damon, I’m saying this for the last time–we’re broken up.”
Having said my piece, I took Ethan back to the private room.
As if nothing had happened, the music and dancing continued.
Two months later, late one night, I unexpectedly answered a call from Damon using an unknown number.

Chapter 8
The man seemed to be smiling as he got straight to the point, asking if we’d ever had a child together.
His tone made it clear he was very drunk.
Besides that, I could hear some faint wind noise through the phone.
I figured he must have seen the medical records I’d left behind.
There was nothing to hide about it anyway.
So I not only admitted it generously but also sincerely congratulated him with a smile:
“Losing the baby was a good thing, Damon. Don’t you hate being tied down most of all?”
A long silence.
Beep beep beep-
He hung up.
It wasn’t until near the end of the year that I learned from a former female colleague that Damon had been in a drunk driving accident and
become a vegetable.
But the Reed family was very wealthy, and even though the chances of their son waking up were slim, they hadn’t given up treatment.
