Among the wedding guests, Lena quickly spotted Noah nibbling on fruit at the edge of the hall.
She hurried over, crouched down, and gently pinched his nose. “Noah, do you remember Lena?”
Noah blinked in surprise, then beamed and threw his arms around her neck.
“Lena, I missed you so much!”
She hugged him tight, rubbing her cheek affectionately against his.
“I missed you too, Noah!”
As she lifted him up, Lena caught sight of a faint bruise on his wrist. Her eyes narrowed; she took his hand, her tone suddenly sharp. “Who did this to you?”
Noah’s gloomy mood instantly brightened—nobody cared for him more than Lena. His face fell, and he mumbled, “It was Charlotte.”
A dangerous glint flashed through Lena’s eyes.
She swallowed her anger, wordlessly hoisting Noah onto the main seat beside her.
Just then, the master of ceremonies, voice ringing with excitement, announced, “The hour has arrived! The wedding ceremony officially begins! Will the bride please make her entrance!”
Thunderous applause broke out. Darren stood beneath the dazzling archway, eyes fixed on the far end of the aisle, which was blanketed in flowers.
As the stately wedding march filled the hall, Xena appeared, gliding forward with poise, a bouquet clutched in her hands.
She wore a princess gown Darren had commissioned at exorbitant expense, a priceless sapphire necklace—the Heart of the Ocean—glittering at her throat, and a diamond-studded tiara atop her head.
Guests murmured in awe, but Darren felt none of the satisfaction or joy he’d expected.
Only a hollow ache gnawed at his chest.
Because of Charlotte.
He’d orchestrated everything—every detail lavish, every gesture calculated—to make sure Herbert saw the gulf between them and gave up.
He wanted Charlotte, too, to see how far apart she and Xena truly were.
He wanted her to accept her place, to abandon any foolish ideas of playing hard to get.
But Charlotte… hadn’t even shown up.
A restless, inexplicable anger twisted inside him, growing tighter with each passing moment.
Suddenly, his phone buzzed in the pocket of his suit trousers.
