That sentence had planted a seed of suspicion deep inside him, leaving Darren restless and irritable.
In the end, he dialed the head of his security team. “What’s the status on the man who caused a scene at the wedding?”
There’d been a crowd of guests at the time. He’d said the man was being handed over to the police, but those who’d worked with him before knew his real rules.
No one got off easy.
The security chief’s voice came through the phone. “Mr. Harrington, the guy’s stubborn as hell. We knocked out two of his teeth and broke three of his fingers, but he still insists he’s your wife’s real father.”
Darren’s brow furrowed. “Collect a DNA sample from him and compare it to my wife’s. I want results.”
Charlotte, once the test is in, let’s see what excuse you’ll use to slander Xena next.
He hung up and drove back to the estate to see how things looked after the wedding.
As soon as he walked in, he caught sight of Lena.
His newlywed wife, Xena, had changed out of her bridal gown and into a simple set of loungewear. She was in the kitchen, cooking.
Darren’s expression darkened instantly. “Who told my wife she could be in the kitchen?”
His icy tone startled the housekeepers, who scrambled to explain, “Mr. Harrington, it was Mrs. Harrington herself—she said she wanted to make dinner tonight because Ms. Harrington requested it …”
Lena was sitting on the couch, playing checkers with Noah. She glanced up at Darren’s outrage and teased him, “Your first wife, Charlotte, used to cook for me all the time. Why can’t Xena?”
Darren was stern. “Lena, I’ll say this just once: Xena graduated from a top medical school. I intend for her to have a future on the world stage—she won’t be doing a housekeeper’s job in this kitchen.”
With that, he went into the kitchen and gently took Xena’s hand. “You’ve been through enough today. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”
Xena squeezed his hand in return, her voice low. “Darren, I’m fine, really.”
From the living room, Lena watched them with a mocking smile, then stood up and took Noah by the hand.
“Come on, Noah. Let’s go out for some fun. No need to get in the way of their newlywed bliss tonight.”
As Lena led Noah outside, he looked back over his shoulder. Neither Darren nor Xena glanced his way; a shadow passed over his eyes.
