“Fine, I’ll go in and find him myself! But let me warn you—if anything happens to my son, not a single one of you will get away with it!”
With that threat hanging in the air, Charlotte stormed down the hallway, pushing open each classroom door one by one.
The teachers exchanged uneasy glances. “She doesn’t look like someone you want to mess with. What if she takes this to court?”
“What’s the point? The security cameras are down. The kids here are well-behaved, and as long as we all stick to the same story, what can she do?”
“Ryan—!”
Charlotte was still calling for Ryan, her anxiety growing with every empty room.
Then, as she passed a locked door, she didn’t hesitate—she kicked it open with a loud crash.
There, curled up in the corner, was Ryan. His face was pale with fear, and Charlotte’s heart clenched at the sight of the bruises marring his cheeks.
She rushed to him, scooping him up in her arms. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I should never have left you here alone.”
Recognizing his mother’s voice, Ryan finally let himself go, wrapping his little arms around her and sobbing quietly against her shoulder.
His tears told Charlotte everything she needed to know.
She carried Ryan straight to the staff office.
Crouching down to his level, she spoke gently, “Don’t be afraid. Tell Mommy—who hurt you?”
Ryan pointed at every single staff member in the room. Five in total. Not a single one escaped his trembling finger.
Charlotte’s expression hardened. “Good boy. Stay right here with me.”
She rose to her feet.
The staff, terrified by the look in her eyes, began backing away, stammering, “Ma’am, you can’t just take a child’s word for it! He probably just tripped and got himself hurt, then hid away—”
