Just as she was about to twist open the lock, an electronic voice chirped, “Please enter the code.”
Same as their old master bedroom—it had a digital lock.
As for the code… Charlotte figured it was worth a shot. She typed in the same combination they used before: a string of numbers made up of her, Darren’s, and Noah’s birthdays.
“Code accepted!”
The crisp mechanical confirmation made Charlotte let out a cold, bitter laugh.
Darren had kept the code she set, kept the clothes she once wore, the gifts she gave him, kept every trace that she had loved him, loved Noah, cherished their little family.
But all those traces of love… now meant nothing to her.
She opened the door and walked out without looking back.
Halfway down the stairs, the front door swung open suddenly.
Two women stepped inside, dressed unmistakably as housekeepers, each carrying an armful of cleaning supplies.
Charlotte slipped into the shadows.
No wonder this mansion was always spotless—someone must come by every day to clean.
The older housekeeper was quietly warning the younger one, “Mr. Harrington said we need to prepare breakfast for the lady in the master bedroom today.”
The young housekeeper blinked in surprise. “That’s odd. Wasn’t there never a lady of the house before? How come someone’s suddenly staying in the master bedroom?”
“Don’t bother trying to figure out the lives of the rich,” the older woman muttered. “And whatever you do, don’t touch the drawer in the coffee table. The last girl who did got fired on the spot.”
The young one’s eyes widened. “What’s in that drawer?”
“I heard it’s a photo of his ex-wife. Shh—don’t let that get out.”
A photo of his ex-wife?
Charlotte frowned.
Seeing the two women start upstairs, Charlotte darted forward, catching them both off guard and knocking them out before they could react.
“Sorry,” she whispered as she quickly took their phones.
As she passed by the coffee table, the words echoed in her mind—“a photo of his ex-wife.”
Driven by a sudden curiosity, Charlotte pulled open the drawer.
Sure enough, inside was a solid gold picture frame. She flipped it over and saw a close-up photo of two hands entwined together.
Her heart skipped a beat.
