Bradley and Charlotte got a marriage license?
Darren let out a cold laugh. What a joke. Charlotte was still under lock and key in his villa—no way could she be registering for marriage with anyone.
The private investigator had to be mistaken.
Besides, who was Charlotte anyway? A woman without a womb, unable to bear children… There was no way Bradley would ever marry her. Impossible.
Darren dismissed the thought, about to bring a forkful of steak to his mouth, when suddenly—
Had Charlotte eaten lunch yet?
The question popped into his mind, leaving him visibly irritated. Why did he keep thinking about that woman? It was becoming a habit, and he didn’t like it one bit.
“Darren, is the food not to your liking?” Xena’s anxious voice broke through his thoughts as she watched the piece of steak hover near his lips.
“It’s fine. Tastes great…” Darren replied absentmindedly, then shoved the meat into his mouth.
Satisfied, Xena smiled. “Let me get you some wine.”
He barely acknowledged her, and the moment she left the dining room, he pulled out his phone and fired off a message to the housekeeper at the villa:
What did she have for lunch?
Charlotte received the text while she was at the courthouse, preparing to fill out the registration forms. Her eyes narrowed slightly.
So Darren didn’t know she’d managed to escape the villa.
Good.
A court clerk’s voice interrupted her thoughts: “Miss, sir, please fill out these forms.”
Charlotte took the paperwork, quickly typing a reply to Darren:
Mr. Harrington, it’s only eleven in the morning. Lunch hasn’t started yet.
Darren replied instantly:
She exerted herself last night. Make her lunch now—make it hearty. If she doesn’t eat well, you can forget about working at Astra ever again!
Charlotte almost laughed. If she didn’t know what kind of man Darren really was, she might’ve mistaken his message for genuine concern.
