Once the police officers and doctors had cleared out, Darren sat down beside the hospital bed, his posture arrogant and his tone cold. “Everyone who hurt you has been taken care of.”

Charlotte didn’t react. She didn’t so much as flutter an eyelid, as if he hadn’t spoken at all.

“You’re blaming me, is that it?”

When she kept silent, Darren grew impatient, tugging irritably at his tie. “And what right do you have to blame me? You did the illegal experiments—you got what you deserved. Prison was your punishment.”

He sneered, “Weren’t you always so tough before? And now you’re putting on this pitiful act—who do you think you’re fooling?”

Charlotte still refused to argue. She slowly turned her head away, staring at the blank wall, withholding even a glance from him.

Her icy indifference made Darren’s throat tighten with frustration. Unconsciously, he reached out and wrapped his hand around hers—her hand was frail, boneless, cool to the touch.

Charlotte trembled, goosebumps prickling along her skin. The bones in her arms and legs ached with a dull pain; she didn’t have the strength to pull away. All she could do was let him hold on.

Seeing her so compliant, Darren’s expression softened a little. “Looks like a stint behind bars finally taught you some manners.”

Charlotte’s thoughts reeled. Was he serious? Her wrist was broken—she couldn’t move it, that was all. And yet he thought she was submitting to him?

A cold chill crept through her, numbing her inside out.

Darren’s voice lowered, coaxing, “Enough of this tantrum. As long as you leave Bradley, I can make sure you walk out of this mess without a record.”

Charlotte closed her eyes, shutting him out completely.

His face darkened. “Is leaving Bradley really that hard for you? All this drama—wasn’t it just to get my attention?”

Her silence grated on his nerves. He hated the emptiness pressing in around them.
