“She’s lying! That paper was my work! I laid the groundwork for artificial heart valve biomaterials!”
Sean’s face flushed an angry red.
Bradley and Charlotte exchanged knowing, silent smiles.
From the audience, Darren fixed Charlotte with a steady gaze. “The optimized design for artificial heart valve materials was the starting point for Harrington Group’s technology. We hold the international patent. And you’re claiming it was yours?”
“If you have no proof, you know exactly what’s at stake,” he continued, but his voice was missing its usual air of superiority. Instead, there was curiosity—genuine curiosity. For the first time, Darren found himself truly intrigued by her.
Charlotte met his eyes without a hint of guilt. “Of course I have proof. Back then, a friend of mine was under pressure from his advisor. I wrote a paper for him, hoping to get him through that rough patch.”
“Unfortunately, as soon as my friend handed it in, his advisor stole it and published it online under his own name. He posted the digital version, but I still have the original file on my computer, and the timestamp is a full year earlier than Mr. Lewis’s publication.”
She turned to Sean, her tone light but deadly. “Oh, and Mr. Lewis? My friend’s name was Herbert. Does that ring a bell?”
All eyes shot to Sean.
A flicker of panic crossed his face. Herbert? That paper was a straight copy of Herbert’s! But how could this girl possibly know that?
Could she really be the original author?
“Lies and slander!” Sean barked, refusing to budge. It had been eight years—there was no way she’d kept the original file. “That paper was my own work! Herbert was just my student. You really think someone of my standing in academia would stoop so low as to steal from an undergrad?”
Charlotte gave a soft laugh. “You don’t have to admit it. When I wrote that paper, I left it eighty percent finished—two key details were missing. Today, as N-LINK’s representative, I’ll be presenting our patented technology and—finally—those two details.”
“First, the compensation formula for material performance in subzero environments.”
The words had barely left her lips when Darren and Sean’s faces turned ashen.
Harrington Group’s artificial heart had always suffered from two fatal flaws. One of them? Complete failure in extremely cold climates.
