Darren forced himself to swallow the rage boiling in his chest. “Talk.”

On the other end, his subordinate hurried to report, “We looked into Elliot Quinn’s call records on the day your ex-wife was sent to prison, just as you instructed. We did find a number with an IP address registered in your neighborhood.”

Darren had previously ordered an investigation using the phone number Xena usually used. That search turned up nothing—her records were spotless.

But he remembered what Elliot had said: that Xena had instructed him to act in prison.

Darren pressed his lips together. “Go on.”

His subordinate continued, “We searched the anonymous number and found messages arranging bribes with hotel staff to start the fire, bank transfers… and payments made to the family of a staff member involved in the camera accident on the day of the auction.”

Darren’s grip on his phone tightened. “Keep talking.”

“There’s more. That anonymous number recently exchanged texts with a virtual number, but this virtual number has heavy encryption. We haven’t managed to crack it yet.”

Darren’s instincts screamed—this was the person he needed to find.

He lowered his voice. “What did the texts say?”

“The message from the virtual number read: ‘Touch Lottie again and you’ll lose everything.’”

Someone was protecting Charlotte? Who was this person to her?

It was a long moment before Darren responded, “Keep working on the decryption. Update me as soon as you have something.”

After ending the call, Darren snatched up his binoculars and trained them on the blinds of the lounge across the way.

But this time, he saw Bradley standing at the window, gazing back at him from across the distance, a half-smile playing on his lips—a look of pure triumph and provocation.
