As soon as Lena finished speaking, Darren cut her off. “Seriously, Lena? Even now, you’re still badmouthing their mother in front of the kids? Do you really want Charlotte and Noah to spend their whole lives hating each other—would that finally make you happy?”
Lena bristled, voice rising in protest. “So now that Charlotte’s married to Bradley, you’re going to yell at your own sister for someone else’s wife?”
Her indignation made Darren’s jaw clench with frustration, but he forced himself to push it aside. He sat down on the edge of the bed and gently steadied Noah’s trembling shoulders. His voice softened, but his eyes were serious. “Noah, look at me. Tell me, who pushed you down the stairs that day?”
Noah’s lower lip trembled as he fought back tears. “It was Xena,” he choked out.
Lena shot to her feet, furious. “What? That wretched woman Xena did this?” She rounded on Darren. “You let me handle her, little brother. If Xena had the nerve to hurt Noah, I’ll make her pay for it myself!”
Darren ignored her demand, keeping his focus on his son. “Noah, are you sure it was only Xena? Was there anyone else there?”
His gut told him there must be more to the story—Xena wouldn’t have risked doing it herself, not when she needed Noah as leverage. He watched Noah closely.
Sure enough, Noah nodded, hesitating. “There was also the housekeeper. I overheard Xena call her ‘Mom.’ The two of them pushed me out the window together…”
Darren’s eyes narrowed. “Which housekeeper?”
“We have more than one, Noah. Who was it?”
Noah’s voice was barely a whisper. “The one who tried to stab Charlotte with a knife… that housekeeper.”
A chill ran through Darren. Lisa. He had sent Lisa to the police once before, but Xena had begged and pleaded until he relented and let her stay. He’d never have guessed that Lisa was actually Xena’s mother.
His knuckles whitened as he gripped his phone. He immediately called the butler. “Find Lisa. Search every inch of the house—bring her to me.”
