“Why should I?” Charlotte’s words were crisp, cold, each syllable more devastating than any outburst could have been. “When you stopped being the person I believed in, it no longer mattered to me whom you favored or mistook. That was your business, not mine.”

“You adored her, let her pull you along—honestly, that was a relief for me. I wish you both nothing but everlasting happiness.”

Darren staggered closer, shoulders bowed, hands trembling as he rested them on her shoulders. “But Charlotte, you know the only reason I ever cared for Xena was because she pretended to be Shortie—she made me believe she was you!”

“You watched me stumble around in the dark. I even pushed you aside for her. Didn’t that hurt you at all?”
