Charlotte stared, speechless.
For a moment, she wondered if she was still dreaming. In her dreams, Darren—usually so aloof and harsh—was reduced to a servant at her beck and call. Yet now, in the cold light of reality, it seemed little had changed.
She avoided his burning gaze as she took the basin and toothbrush from his hands, quietly beginning her morning routine.
Outside the tent, the low hum of professors in conversation drifted in.
After a night’s rest, the team was ready for today’s expedition.
Before setting out, Darren equipped everyone with extra safety lines and thermal gear. Taking charge at the front, he pushed Charlotte’s wheelchair himself as the group moved forward across the frozen terrain.
They trekked for almost two hours before the ice ahead took on a faint, bluish glow.
Charlotte pulled out the analyzer, her fingers flying across the screen.
The readings confirmed it: beneath the ice lay the very crystal they had been searching for—a low-temperature core material that remained stable even at minus sixty degrees.
“We found it!” one of the professors exclaimed, his voice trembling with excitement.
Immediately, the team crowded around, faces alight with joy.
“Take a sample from the ice, but be careful not to damage the crystal structure,” Charlotte instructed.
At Darren’s signal, two seasoned mercenaries began their precise work.
“Sample secured!”
With utmost care, the mercenary placed a small piece of the blue crystal into an insulated container and handed it to Charlotte.
But just as everyone was basking in the thrill of discovery—crack!
“The ice is breaking! Everyone, back up—now!”
