Deep Affection? Loyalty?
Darren looked as though someone had hit a raw nerve. He let out a low, bitter laugh. “St. Astra’s Orphanage really does turn out brilliant actors, doesn’t it?”
“First there’s Charlotte, who spent three years pretending to be loyal to one man while her heart belonged to another. And you, Herbert—what’s this, a decade-long performance of the world’s most devoted dragon-slayer, secretly terrified of dragons? Absolute masterpieces, both of you.”
Herbert’s face darkened with fury. “Pretending? Is that what you call it? Even now, you’re still determined to smear Charlotte’s name!”
Charlotte?
Hearing Herbert blurt out her name so familiarly was like tossing a lit match into a powder keg. Darren’s composure shattered.
He strode forward and grabbed Herbert by the collar, his tone low and menacing. “Herbert! Calling out ‘Charlotte’ over and over—what, trying to make sure she never forgets you, even in the next life?”
Herbert’s breath caught as Darren’s grip tightened. Still, he shot back each word with icy precision. “Mr. Harrington, you’re about to marry your new flame. Do you really care what your ex-wife does with her afterlife?”
The mention of “ex-wife” sent Darren completely over the edge.
His fist connected hard with Herbert’s cheekbone, sending him reeling backward. Herbert crashed into the equipment table; his gold-rimmed glasses slid askew, and a trickle of blood appeared at the corner of his mouth.
“Dr. Nelson!”
Lab technicians and security rushed over in a panic.
Darren’s bodyguards immediately moved to block their advance, forming a human barricade. The tension in the laboratory was palpable, the air crackling with hostility.
Darren’s chest heaved, his eyes dark and dangerous.
He’d lost all patience. “Let’s skip the games. Hand over the woman who competed in the last fencing tournament. I just need to confirm something with her. After that, we’ll stay out of each other’s way.”
Suddenly, Charlotte’s voice rang out from the corridor. “Dr. Nelson, I need a job to complete the second stage of the chip project anyway. I’ll take the bodyguard position.”
Everyone turned to her, concern etched on their faces.
Herbert was troubled as well. “Charlotte, Noah and Darren have both hurt you deeply before. If you’re going to be around them all the time, I’m worried...”
Charlotte took a small bottle of medication from her bag, looking confident. “I carry emergency meds with me now. There won’t be another incident like last time.”
Following the instructions on Darren’s business card, she made her way to the Harrington family estate.
The newly hired butler ushered her into the drawing room.
“Please wait here. I’ll let Mr. Harrington know you’ve arrived.”
