As soon as he finished speaking, Noah didn’t hesitate for even a heartbeat. His small body scrambled up the pipe, moving so fast he was little more than a blur in the darkness.
But Charlotte…
She was bigger than Noah, and in the narrow shaft, she could barely move. There was no way she could escape in just two minutes.
And what limited her even more… was Noah himself.
She knew all too well: if she tried to follow him, as soon as the bomb went off, the shockwave would blast them both to pieces even if they’d barely made it out.
But if she stayed and used her own body to shield the blast… maybe, just maybe, Noah would have a chance.
Noah resented her, blamed her—but he was just a child, without the capacity for such dark intentions.
In the end, he was nothing more than someone else’s weapon...
And as for who was behind all this—besides Xena, Charlotte couldn’t imagine anyone else.
Tick—tick—tick—
Time was slipping away, second by second.
Charlotte watched the small, frantic shape ahead of her dart through the darkness, growing less and less distinct.
Suddenly, she whispered, so softly it was nearly lost in the echoing pipe, “Noah, I gave you life, but I owe you nothing.”
Her voice was faint, but it still traveled down the narrow shaft, reaching Noah’s ears.
He froze, jaw clenched, then twisted around and shouted back, “Charlotte, if I had a choice, I’d have been born from Xena instead! I don’t want you!”
With that, he didn’t look back. He scrambled for the exit, not caring whether his mother lived or died, and climbed the rope out without another moment’s hesitation.
Up above, outside the shaft.
Darren was arguing with his technicians over the malfunctioning surveillance equipment when suddenly he heard something—movement from the mouth of the shaft.
He shoved past the staff and peered down, just in time to see a small, mud-soaked figure haul himself out of the darkness.
Noah.
“Dad!”
Noah’s voice trembled with sheer terror.
