Darren cut her off. “Don’t say another word like this. Go to the hotel first and get yourself cleaned up. As for everything else… I’ll handle it.”
His own clothes were just as filthy, and until the accident investigation wrapped up, he had no interest in discussing anything further.
Besides, Noah, not far away, was desperately in need of a shower to wash away all the grime caked on his skin.
Charlotte swallowed whatever she’d been about to say, slipped out of his arms, and fell silent.
Half an hour later, she stood under a cold shower in the nearest five-star hotel to the preschool. The chill drove away the feverish heat in her body, but she was left weak and shaky, her limbs heavy and unresponsive.
Was this some kind of side effect from the implant?
A sharp knock sounded at the door, cutting off her thoughts. She quickly pulled on the set of clean clothes Darren had sent up for her.
With damp hair draped over her shoulders, Charlotte made her way to suite 888—the business suite Darren had booked.
Inside, she found Xena, Noah, and several members of the preschool staff, including the headmistress and the facility manager, all waiting.
Noah, now changed into fresh clothes, sat nervously on Xena’s lap. His gaze darted around the room, never once meeting Charlotte’s eyes.
Suddenly, the bedroom door swung open and Darren strode out.
He wore a loose, gray bathrobe, his strong chest and collarbones barely hidden by the fabric. He crossed his legs and took the main seat on the sofa, the air of authority unmistakable.
“Everyone’s here.”
His voice was deep, commanding, charged with barely checked anger.
A heavy silence settled. Darren’s words broke it, his tone cold and steely. “Today, my son brushed shoulders with death. I expect answers. Noah, tell us exactly what happened.”
Noah hung his head, stammering, “I—I was just playing with my friends when this dirty-looking man came up to me. He said my mom was looking for me.”
