Emmy stared at her phone—the social feed was spotless, like a blank page waiting for a new story.
With a quick tap, she changed her settings, making everything public. No more “visible for three days only.” No more hiding. She hit the button to start a new post.
Abriella was already blowing up her messages, tossing out ideas: “Gift from hubby, love you~”
Emmy just smiled to herself and ignored it. Instead, she typed her own words over the photo.
“Starting over. Rewriting my story.
My first post goes to my Mr. Nelson @James.
The bracelet you picked is perfect. I love it.
Here’s to the rest of our lives together.”
Send.
Her phone lit up instantly, buzzing nonstop with notifications.
Abriella’s voice practically exploded through the phone. “Girl, you are wild! You wiped your whole feed! This is epic! You’re finally letting go of the past and opening up to new love!”
Emmy’s reply was calm and even. “I already let go of the past. But I’m not opening myself up to new love. I’ll play my part. Your cousin’s a good man, and he deserves better than being strung along. Since we can’t divorce, I’ll give him everything he wants—just not my heart.”
There was a pause. Abriella sounded like she was choking on her frustration. “You’re impossible! Why was I even happy for you? My cousin is nothing like Dean. He’s not a jerk. He’d never lie to—”
She cut herself off.
Keeping his real identity secret… did that count as lying?
Abriella quickly changed her tune. “He would never betray you. Seriously, you have to trust me. I’d never set you up, right?”
“I know you wouldn’t. But love is exhausting, Abriella. I can’t do that to myself again.”
All Emmy wanted this time around was an easy life. Take back what was hers. Protect her mom. That was enough.
Abriella sounded like she was about to stomp a hole in the floor. “You’re just scared because you got burned before! You’re so stubborn!”
She grumbled for a bit, then suddenly changed topics. “So what if my cousin wants a kid? You said you’d give him everything but love. Does that include a baby?”
Emmy went quiet.
