The second they stepped out, they almost ran right into the firefighters coming back from their shift.
Will spotted them and grinned, “Hey, is your wife feeling any better?”
Emmy’s cheeks heated up all over again. Without thinking, she ducked behind James’s broad back.
“Yeah... much better. Thanks,” she mumbled.
James ignored the guys completely, hefted the safe onto his shoulder, and strode off down the stairs like he had somewhere urgent to be.
As they rounded the landing, laughter exploded from the second-floor hallway.
“Did you see her face? She was blushing like a ripe peach. Seriously, too cute.”
“No wonder James can’t get enough. You could just tell what they were up to in there.”
“I mean, with her tiny frame, how does she survive James’s silent attacks? Bet she won’t even be able to get out of bed tomorrow!”
Emmy wanted to melt into the floor. She fought the urge to clap her hands over her ears.
James shot her a sideways look. His face was unreadable, but there was the faintest smirk at the corner of his mouth.
It was already past five. The sun wasn’t as harsh, but the heat still hung in the thick air.
Suddenly, James stopped and set the safe down.
“Wait here,” he said.
He slipped into the staff room and came back out with a long black umbrella in hand.
“Use this.” He handed it to her.
Emmy blinked, surprised.
She’d totally forgotten about sunscreen, but this man—of course—hadn’t.
She popped the umbrella open and fell into step behind him. After a few paces, something clicked.
“Didn’t you say there weren’t any umbrellas in the fire station?”
She eyed his back suspiciously.
Last time, after their group dinner, he’d said exactly that when it started pouring.
James didn’t even slow down. “Yeah. That’s why I just had someone go out and buy a few.”
