Emmy had barely taken a bite before she started coughing like crazy, face turning bright red.

“Hey, slow down!” Abriella shoved a glass of water into her hand, patting Emmy’s back and sending Steve a death glare. “Seriously, why’d you have to bring up that loser right now?”

Steve held up his hands, looking totally innocent. “Don’t blame me. She asked. I even tried to warn her.”

“I’m fine, really.” Emmy finally caught her breath and waved them off, trying to play it cool.

She glanced up, her eyes flicking to James almost without thinking. Her voice dropped to a quiet murmur. “There’s a leak in the company. That’s why I asked Steve to help me dig into it.”

James’s jaw tightened, his eyes unreadable and dark.

Abriella, meanwhile, was already fired up. “Wait, are you telling me Dean’s behind Quinnie trying to sabotage your company? What kind of jerk does that?”

Steve shook his head, voice calm. “Not exactly. Dean’s backing Quinnie, but all the crap she pulled at work? That was her, not him.”

A chill ran down Emmy’s spine. She blurted out, “Was it Evelina?”

Steve shook his head again. “We can’t say for sure yet.” He hesitated, then switched gears. “But for what it’s worth, Dean did give Quinnie one order…”

He trailed off, glancing over at James with a loaded look.

Emmy got the message and quickly cut in. “Let’s not do this now. Just send me the evidence later.”

But then James’s voice cut through, low and cold.

“Say it.”

Steve let out a sigh. “Dean told Quinnie that if Forward Technology goes bankrupt, she’s supposed to take all the blame and go to prison for you. He promised her a million bucks if she does the full ten years.”

A million dollars. For most people, that’s money you only see in your dreams.

Abriella stared at him, completely stunned. “What is wrong with him? Why is he so sure Forward Technology will crash? Why does he think Emmy would even go to jail for it?”
