“What the hell? Someone’s actually trying to steal James’s girl?” one of the guys blurted out, wide-eyed.
Another teammate looked worried. “But that guy’s driving a Maybach. That’s top-tier. You think Emmy might actually change her mind?”
Someone snorted. “Come on, Emmy’s got her own Porsche. She’s not hurting for money. And James? He’s got the looks and the body. No rich pretty boy can outshine him. Emmy’s not going anywhere.”
“Yeah, I get that. But those rich boys know how to talk. James is awesome, but let’s be real, he doesn’t have the pedigree. I just hope Emmy doesn’t get swept off her feet…”
So here they were, a bunch of tough guys huddled together, all sighing and stressing over their captain’s love life like it was a national emergency.
Meanwhile, Emmy sped through two intersections and swerved under the shade of some trees. She slammed the brakes, the car jerking to a stop.
“If you’ve got something to say, say it now. Then get out.”
Dean leaned forward, voice desperate. “Emmy, I didn’t know Quinnie would go that far. She almost got you killed.”
“I admit I paid her off, but I had good intentions. I was just scared Forward Tech going under would ruin you too. I wanted her to take the fall for you.”
“If I’d known someone else was pulling her strings, I never would’ve gotten her involved, I swear.”
Emmy’s tone was ice cold. “Dean, how many times do I have to say it? We’re done. My life, my company, even whether I go to jail—it’s none of your business.”
“I can’t just stand by and do nothing!” Dean’s voice rose, tight with emotion. “Do you even mean that? No matter what you say, I’m not giving up on you.”
“And what about James? He’s a firefighter. He could die any day on the job!”
“Why can’t you just pick someone like me—a guy with a real future—instead of taking a chance on someone who might not even come home one day?”
“Don’t you dare talk about him like that.” Emmy’s voice was low and sharp, her teeth clenched.
Suddenly, something clicked. Emmy shot him a glare. “How did my dad even know James is a firefighter? You told him, didn’t you?”
