Dumped My Cheating Ex. Now I'm Sleeping Next to a Billionaire CEO novel Chapter 129

Bang!

Dean hit the ground hard, blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He just lay there, stunned, barely able to process what had happened.

Emmy barely had time to catch her breath before a strong arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her into a familiar, protective embrace. The car door slammed shut behind her, and in the next instant, they were speeding away, leaving the chaos behind.

Inside the car, Emmy clutched her bleeding knee, tears stinging her eyes from the pain. Still, she couldn’t help glancing over at the man in the driver’s seat, his sharp profile carved in shadow, jaw clenched and expression unreadable.

“James, how did you know where I was?” she sniffled, trying to steady herself. “But really, thank you. If you hadn’t shown up, I don’t even know how I would’ve gotten out of there.”

James kept his eyes fixed on the road, his grip on the steering wheel so tight his knuckles turned white. His voice was low and icy. “What was he trying to do to you?”

Emmy’s heart skipped. She bit her lip, dropping her gaze. “I handed over the evidence Steve gave me to the police. They probably questioned Dean, and… he just wanted to explain that what Quinnie did wasn’t his fault.”

James’s voice was even colder this time. “I’m asking what he tried to do to you. What made you so desperate you’d rather jump out of a moving car?”

A chill ran through her, and she suddenly didn’t dare tell the truth. Fiddling with her fingers, she dodged, “He just tried to grab my hand.”

She lifted her head, forcing herself to meet his eyes. “You don’t need to worry. I promised I’d never betray what we have, and I meant it. I’d never do anything to hurt you.”

James didn’t say another word, but the tension in the car was so thick she could barely breathe.

They pulled up to a pharmacy. James got out, came back with antiseptic and cotton swabs, and opened the back door. His face was cold as stone as he knelt beside her, disinfecting the scrape on her knee.

Emmy sucked in a breath, wincing at how much it stung. She bit down hard to keep from crying out. Her skin was so fair that the bloody scrape looked even more glaring.
