The room emptied in seconds. Emmy’s cousins and brothers-in-law bolted for the door, clutching their heads, practically tripping over each other like they were being chased by something out of a nightmare.
When the chaos settled, James was the only one left.
He looked perfectly calm, sitting there like nothing happened. He took his time, picking up a piece of braised pork with his fork, and dropped it into his bowl.
The table was wrecked. All the light veggie dishes and the delicate fish were smashed on the floor, plates shattered everywhere. Only a few meat dishes managed to survive the carnage, still sitting there like nothing was wrong.
Emmy walked in, eyes wide. “What happened in here?”
James reached out, caught her wrist, and gently pulled her to sit beside him. “Sit. Let’s keep eating.”
She just stared at him, not moving.
He met her eyes and explained, voice steady and cool. “They called me a freeloader, tried to make me eat soggy rice as some kind of humiliation. I lost my patience and... handled it.”
“For the record, I did offer them some dishes afterward,” he added, nodding at the shards on the floor. “What can I say? They just couldn’t hold on.”
The tension in Emmy’s shoulders finally eased.
She couldn’t stop a tiny smile from sneaking onto her lips, but she quickly tried to hide it.
She grabbed a napkin, took his hand, and softly wiped the blood from his knuckles.
“That’s what they get. Let them know my man isn’t someone they can just push around.”
James looked at her, his dark eyes deep and unreadable.
When she finished cleaning his hand, he asked in a low voice, “You don’t even like fish, do you?”
The question caught her off guard. She blinked, not sure where he was going with this.
James glanced at the ruined plate of steamed bass on the floor. His voice was impossible to read. “Your cousin insisted you love fish. Said if I broke that one, you’d never forgive me.”
“That’s crazy. You know I can’t stand fish,” Emmy blurted out.
