The butler rushed in, barely catching his breath.

“Miss Emmy, there’s news from the hospital.”

“Sir’s going to be fine. He just scraped his forehead a little. The doctor said he might have a mild concussion, so they’ll keep him overnight for observation, but it’s nothing serious. He’ll be home tomorrow.”

Teresa finally let out a shaky breath, relief softening her tense shoulders.

She caught a glimpse of James coming down the hall and called out, “Mr. Nelson, could I ask you a favor?”

James walked over, his deep eyes flicking to Emmy before settling on Teresa.

Emmy glanced at him, but the second their eyes met, she immediately looked away.

“Yes, ma’am?” His voice was calm and steady, like always.

Teresa took Emmy’s hand and, to Emmy’s utter shock, placed it right into James’s broad, warm palm.

“I’m really grateful you brought Emmy home tonight.” Teresa’s eyes shimmered as she looked at their joined hands. “Even if her father and the rest of the family refuse to accept you, it doesn’t matter. I do. You’re the son-in-law I’ve chosen.”

“Mom!” Emmy blurted out, yanking her hand back, her face burning with embarrassment.

“Let me finish.” Teresa tightened her grip and looked straight at James.

“My Emmy is such a sweet, pure-hearted girl. But honestly, I’ve spoiled her. She’s like a flower in a greenhouse—she looks confident and beautiful, but she’s not used to any hardships. She needs someone dependable, someone who’ll protect her and stick by her side.”

Teresa’s eyes were full of hope, her trust laid bare. “I really believe you’re the right person. Will you promise me, with everything you have, that you’ll take care of Emmy?”

The words hung in the air, heavy and intense. Emmy couldn’t help blurting out, “Mom, this is just a marriage contract! You’re putting him in a tough spot!”

But before she could say anything else, James’s low voice cut through the tension above her head. “I will.”

Emmy jerked her head up, staring at him in disbelief. She found herself staring straight into his eyes, warm and steady, as if their earlier arguments had never happened.
