Emmy didn’t even know where to look. “Just—just give it to me, that’s fine.”
She grabbed the clothes and practically sprinted out of the room, flagging down a housekeeper to take them away for laundry.
But as she handed over the pile, a pair of black boxer briefs slipped out and landed right at her feet.
On instinct, she bent down to pick them up, her fingers brushing the soft fabric. That’s when it hit her what she was actually holding.
Her face burned. Pinching the underwear between two fingers like it might bite her, she shoved it at the housekeeper. “Take these. Please.”
The housekeeper’s lips twitched as she fought back a laugh, clutching the laundry as she hurried off.
Emmy lingered by her bedroom door, pacing, her nerves all over the place. Just picturing his smirk and those broad shoulders was enough to knock the courage out of her.
She asked a housekeeper to find some men’s pajamas, but the answer came back quick: there weren’t any in the whole house. Emmy had made sure of that—after Dean left, she’d cleared out every single thing he’d left behind, not even a sock survived.
She stood in the hallway, chewing her lip, debating what to do. Finally, she took a shaky breath and pushed the door open.
James was sitting there like he owned the place, sprawled out in her pink gaming chair, long legs crossed, flipping through one of her notebooks. When he heard her come in, he didn’t even bother to look up. “You’re back,” he said, voice low and a little lazy. “Where’s my pajamas?”
Her eyes dropped straight to the towel hanging dangerously low on his hips. Her brain immediately supplied a vivid image of him with absolutely nothing on, and her cheeks went up in flames.
She rushed to her closet and pulled out her biggest, palest pink bathrobe, shoving it into his arms.
“Here. Try this.”
She turned away, refusing to look at him, terrified that her imagination would get the best of her.
James just raised an eyebrow, didn’t say a word, and headed for the bathroom with the robe in hand.
