The nurse leaned in and whispered, “Tyler’s condition came back. He’s in surgery right now. The whole Nelson family is here, so please don’t wander around.”

Emmy thanked her quietly and made her way to the inpatient wing.

The elevator doors had barely opened before Aunt Sally stormed over, her voice sharp with warning. “When you go in there, you’d better talk to your father properly. The doctor said he can’t handle any more stress.”

“I know,” Emmy replied.

She walked toward the hospital room, and the two bodyguards who’d followed her stopped respectfully at the door.

Aunt Sally glanced at the scene, her lips curling in disdain as she muttered, “Married herself a freeloader and now she shows off like she’s some big shot.”

Inside, Cooper was sitting up in bed, bandages wrapped around his head, but his face was flushed and full of life.

The moment Emmy walked in, his eyes locked on her, cold and sharp as knives.

“What happened to Mr. Sparrow? Who hit him?”

Emmy understood immediately. Dean must have come running to complain.

She wasn’t about to throw James under the bus and let them go after him. So she blinked, putting on her best innocent face. “Mr. Sparrow got attacked? Who’d dare to do that?”

“Don’t play dumb with me!” Cooper’s glare was fierce. “He was hit because of you! Was it that pretty boy you married?”

“You give him too much credit,” Emmy shot back. “He’s just a regular firefighter. There’s no way he’d have the guts to put Mr. Sparrow in the hospital.”

“Mr. Sparrow’s been making enemies lately, stealing people’s deals left and right. Maybe someone was just waiting for a chance to get back at him. You can’t blame everything on me, can you?”

Cooper narrowed his eyes, his suspicion obvious.
