“You—” Cooper jabbed a finger right in her face, his voice echoing off the walls. “You’re nothing but an ungrateful daughter!”

Aunt Sally rushed to steady him, shooting Emmy a glare. “How many times have I told you? Don’t upset your father! Emmy, do you want to see him collapse from anger?”

Emmy paused, her eyes hard. Then she spoke, calm but unflinching. “Dad, you’ve probably heard by now—the only reason I landed that deal was because Mr. Nelson gave me a chance. You know what kind of man he is. If he finds out you killed the deal he personally approved…”

She let out a cold laugh, letting the threat hang in the air.

Honestly, Emmy knew someone as important as Jamie Nelson probably didn’t even remember her face, let alone her name. But right now, if she wanted to keep Forward Technology alive, she had to play whatever cards she had—even if it meant hiding behind the power of his name.

Cooper’s face went even darker.

“I told you,” he snapped, “you can take your project to Nexus Technologies and finish it there.”

“I’m not going.” Emmy’s answer was quick and sharp. “It’s not like I’ll ever get a single cent of inheritance from you anyway. If I’m going down, I’m taking the whole thing with me. Who knows, maybe Mr. Nelson will be happy to swoop in and take over.”

“You— You ungrateful brat! Get out! Get out of here right now!”

Cooper was so furious he grabbed the apple off the nightstand and flung it right at her.

Emmy dodged, the apple smacking hard against the door with a loud thud.

She took a steadying breath, her voice steady as she said, “If you don’t believe me, we’ll see who breaks first. I’ve got nothing left to lose, Dad. The real question is, are you ready to just hand Starlight Corporation over to Mr. Nelson?”

With that, she turned and walked out.

Behind her, Cooper started coughing violently, the sound rattling down the hallway.

Aunt Sally hurried to hand him some water, fanning the flames. “She’s lost her mind! Did you hear her threatening you like that? Are you really scared of some Mr. Nelson? Just announce her company’s bankruptcy already!”
