Evelina walked out, her arm wrapped snugly around Dean’s, her whole face glowing with happiness.
“Dean, thank you,” she said, beaming. “You’ve come with me over and over, never losing patience. Honestly, I thought this was never going to happen.”
Dean gave her hand a gentle squeeze, his voice soft. “You did this yourself. When Dr. Pepper officially announces she’s taking you on as her apprentice, I’ll throw you a huge party. I’ll even bring your mom back from overseas for it.”
Evelina’s eyes shone. “You’re the best, Dean.”
Before she could say anything else, her gaze landed on Emmy standing not far away. Evelina’s smile faded in surprise.
“Emmy, you’re still here?”
Dean’s expression darkened immediately, and when he looked at Emmy, it was clear he was annoyed.
“Dr. Pepper personally praised Eve’s paper. You really need to let this go.”
“You don’t even have any real results. And even if you did, look at Dr. Pepper’s students—every single one of them graduated from the top schools. Waiting here is just a waste of your time.”
Emmy didn’t so much as blink, as if Dean was just another piece of furniture.
She walked right past him, eyes fixed on the inner doors as they opened and an attendant stepped out.
Emmy hurried over. “Excuse me, can I go in now?”
The attendant smiled politely. “I’m sorry, Ms. Lincoln, but Dr. Pepper is taking her afternoon nap right now.”
Dean followed, his tone mocking. “See? Dr. Pepper doesn’t even want to see you.”
He even tried to grab her hand. “Come on, let’s get lunch together.”
Emmy dodged him without a word, still standing tall and straight—a stubborn aspen refusing to bend.
Dean’s patience snapped, his voice suddenly harsh. “Emmy, are you deaf or just ignoring me?”
This time, Emmy slowly turned her head, her eyes cold and steady.
“You know I don’t want to talk to you, but you keep pushing, Mr. Sparrow. When did you get this thick-skinned?”
Dean’s face turned bright red with anger.
After thinking for a moment, she finally turned and walked away from the estate—for now.
Inside the study, a video call was in full swing.
“Did you see that?” The old professor, with his white hair and bright eyes, looked smug as he spoke to the person on the other end. “That girl’s already waited outside three hours just to ask me to be her mentor!”
The young man on the screen let out a helpless laugh. “Professor, how long are you going to make her wait? Careful, or she’ll think you really don’t want her and just give up.”
“Relax,” the professor said, waving a hand and grinning. “That girl is way more stubborn than you ever were. When she sets her mind to something, nothing can stop her. The second I got her message, I knew she’d show up. And sure enough, here she is.”
He stroked his beard, looking completely pleased with himself.
“Today, I’m going to give her a taste of her own medicine. She turned me down before—now it’s her turn to wait and see how it feels. Call it payback.”
The student on the other end just sighed.
Right then, there was a quiet knock at the door.
The attendant stepped inside, respectful as ever. “Professor, Ms. Lincoln has left.”
