The TV was tuned to the morning finance news, and the anchor’s voice filled the room.
“At nine this morning, Nelson Corporation held their quarterly board meeting. After the shocking news of Vice President Jamie’s whirlwind marriage, the company’s stock price soared. Many believe this is a sign he’s officially returning to the company’s leadership…”
“But once again, Mr. Nelson was a no-show. He’s as mysterious as ever. We still haven’t seen a real photo of Mr. Nelson, and the rumors about his new spouse are out of control…”
Emmy was completely caught up in the broadcast, hardly noticing the tall, broad shadow drifting closer out of the corner of her eye.
She jumped a little when she realized James was standing beside her, also watching the TV.
She couldn’t help herself. “That Jamie I told you about—the one who looks so much like you? That’s him.”
She leaned in, lowering her voice like she was letting him in on a secret. “Isn’t the whole thing weird? His sudden marriage sent the stock price soaring, and this would’ve been the perfect time for him to show up at the board meeting and lock in his inheritance. But he just disappears? It makes no sense.”
“People always say the eldest son is the favorite, but Mr. Nelson has held onto control for so long. Honestly, I think he’s just waiting for Jamie. Everyone says Jamie’s way more capable than his older brother.”
James’s deep voice cut through her chatter. “Your voice is barely back, and you’re already talking nonstop.”
Emmy bit her lip, caught off guard.
He looked at her. “You’re really interested in Nelson Corporation, huh?”
She tried to play it cool. “Who isn’t curious? Besides, our company just started working with their subsidiary, Vista Tech. It doesn’t hurt to know a little more.”
She waved it off. “Forget it. You probably wouldn’t get all this business stuff anyway.”
Switching gears, she glanced at his laptop. “You’ve been working all afternoon. What does a firefighter have to do on a computer for hours?”
“Nothing special,” James replied, picking up the remote and flipping to a period drama on TV.
He added, “Don’t you girls love your TV shows? Watch this instead. Don’t believe everything you hear on the news.”
Emmy laughed at his serious tone. “And how do you know it’s all nonsense?” she teased, giving him a playful look. “Unless your last name is Nelson and you know all the secrets?”
