Emmy yanked the covers off and looked down at herself in a rush of panic.
“Chill out!” Abriella said with a grin. “Yeah, you got set up, but you’re fine. Nothing happened. I was the one who got you changed, so stop worrying.”
Relief flooded through Emmy, but her expression was still all over the place.
Sure, nothing terrible had happened, but she couldn’t forget—she’d kissed Mr. Nelson. She’d promised James she’d never do anything to hurt him, and now… here she was.
Abriella’s voice turned sharp with anger. “It’s all because of that jerk who drugged you! The manager found out it was some intern who thought you were pretty and tried to pull something. Thank god Mr. Nelson was a gentleman and brought you back right away.”
Then Abriella leaned in, eyes full of mischief. “By the way, that stuff they gave you was strong. Are you sure nothing happened between you and Mr. Nelson?”
Emmy waved her hands fast, flustered. “No, definitely not! Nothing happened!”
Abriella gave her a look, one eyebrow raised. “Then why do you look like the sky just fell?”
Emmy glanced away, voice quiet. “Still, it was my own fault for drinking what the waiter handed me…”
She suddenly stared at Abriella. “You’re his cousin. Are you actually hoping something happened between me and Mr. Nelson?”
Abriella just laughed, all sly. “I’m just asking. But look at you, blushing like crazy, all guilty. Wait—did you… kiss Mr. Nelson?”
“Don’t make things up!” Emmy shot back, way too quick, and started pushing Abriella out the door. “Go home already, I’ve got stuff to do!”
“Alright, alright, I’m going!” Abriella was still cracking up, and just before she left, she poked her head back in, winking. “Oh, and there’s soup in the kitchen. Your boyfriend made it just for you. Don’t forget to have some! Call me if you need anything!”
“Yeah, yeah, just go!” Emmy groaned.
The door banged shut, and for the first time all day, it was quiet.
Emmy flopped back onto the soft bed, pulling the covers over her head and wishing she could just disappear.
How could she have been so dumb? Why did she take that drink from a random waiter? And now she’d kissed another guy—how was she supposed to face James?
Her stomach rumbled, reminding her she hadn’t eaten, so she dragged herself to the kitchen.
There was still a pot of warm pumpkin rice soup waiting for her. James had remembered she liked it—she’d only mentioned it once, ages ago, when she was in the hospital.
