It suddenly hit Emmy—she really had promised, back at the hospital, to treat James and his buddies to dinner after she was discharged.
Not only had she totally forgotten, but now he had to remind her.
So embarrassing.
But thinking about dinner meant seeing James again, which made her a little nervous.
Still, putting it off wouldn’t help. Might as well rip the Band-Aid off.
She bit her lip and texted him, Let’s do it tonight. I’ll send you the address in a bit.
She hesitated, then added, And can you tell Steve for me too?
Next, she opened another chat.
Emmy: Hey Abriella, are you free tonight? I’m having dinner with your cousin and his firefighter crew.
Abriella: No chance! Sure, I love a room full of hot guys, but not if my cousin’s there to ruin the fun.
Emmy grinned, typing back, Steve’s coming too. It’s not just his teammates.
Abriella: Girl, you’re going to dinner with a bunch of guys? That’s so awkward! As your best friend, I have to come rescue you.
Emmy couldn’t help but laugh.
In her last life, Abriella actually married Steve, though this time around she’d never admitted her crush. Emmy just played dumb.
That night, at a barbecue joint near the fire station, Emmy went all out and booked the whole place.
She’d barely arrived when James walked in with his crew.
All those young firefighters—tall, strong, and full of energy—even out of uniform, they couldn’t hide their confidence. They were so magnetic that people passing by couldn’t help but stare.
Emmy looked up just as James, leading the group, came through the door.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly looked away.
