The moment Kai gave the order, I moved. There was no time for thanks or acknowledgement. The world narrowed, the people in it becoming mere tools for the task at hand.

My mind was already deep in the process, the outside world fading away.

The clock was ticking. Every second the parasite fed on his dying essence, the harder it would be to bring him back from the brink.

"I need a full surgical tray. Now," I commanded the nearest nurse, not even looking at her.

My tone wasn't a request, it was an order born of absolute necessity. The nurse, a young woman who had been frozen in fear a moment before, was jolted into action.

Used to obeying authority, she simply recognized the new, stronger one in the room, and rushed to get what I needed.

I turned to Dr. Albright. His face was a mask of shock, humiliation, and bitter resentment. He was being upstaged in his own operating theater.

"You'll assist," I told him, my voice leaving no room for argument.

"Retract the ribs when I make the incision," I instructed, my tone crisp and professional. "Hold the clamps steady. Do not get in my way."

I had effectively demoted the chief of medicine to a resident. It was a calculated, necessary assertion of dominance.

I needed him focused and compliant, not questioning my every move. His pride was irrelevant in the face of a life. I saw him hesitate, his jaw clenching.
