Cecilia quickly shook her head. “Theo, I get it, I really do. You don’t need to apologize. I’m not mad at you.”
Theodore’s brow furrowed, and he fell silent.
Cecilia pressed her lips together, hesitating for a moment. “Theo… why don’t we just buy tickets and head home together?”
“There’s no need,” Theodore said, forcing a small smile. “You should go get some sleep. Try to rest early.”
Cecilia shook her head, refusing to budge. “If you’re upset, I can’t enjoy myself either. There’ll be plenty of chances to have fun later—let’s just go home for now.”
Theodore rubbed his temples and slumped back on the couch, looking at her with tired eyes. “Wouldn’t that be unfair to you?”
She gave a gentle smile. “Not at all. Theo, don’t you know me by now? I just want you to be happy. That’s all I care about.”
He sighed deeply. “Go get some rest. We’ll talk about it tomorrow.”
“Okay,” Cecilia agreed softly, but instead of leaving, she settled down on the carpet at his feet, unmoving.
“Go on, really. I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.”
Cecilia nodded, then hesitated. “Theo, try to talk to Emma calmly, okay? Don’t lose your temper. The more you push, the more she’ll run.”
At the mention of Emma, Theodore’s frown deepened.
Cecilia hurried to reassure him. “Please, Theo, don’t stress yourself out. You’ve spoiled Emma these past few years—she’s used to being treated like a princess. It’s normal for girls her age to be a little willful. You’ve done everything for her, so of course she takes it for granted sometimes. But this is just a phase—she’s just acting out…”
She knew she’d said just enough—any more and he might start to suspect something. Still, she wanted to fan the flames just a bit further.
Once she lay down, Cecilia pulled out her phone and sent Jared a long message.
Meanwhile, Theodore was absentmindedly staring at his phone, Emma’s chat window open, when a new message from Jared popped up: Theo? Your wife’s giving you trouble again?
Jared had never gotten along with Emma, so Theodore had no intention of involving him. He shot off a reply: How do you know about this?
Jared: Cici told me. She’s just so worried about you.
Theodore glanced over at Cecilia, curled up in bed.
