Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 304

Not until this moment did Theodore finally believe she truly meant to go through with the divorce.

He reached out, catching her hand. “Wait.”

Emma glanced at him.

“I… I’ll go look over the agreement again.” He held onto her, suddenly refusing to let go. “Is it because of him?”

Why was he asking that again?

Emma stared at him, confused.

Theodore turned his gaze to Larson. “Is it because of this man? Is that why you want to leave me? Do you really think he’s better than me?”

So that’s what he meant…

Emma yanked her hand free. “Theodore, stop assuming the worst about everyone! He’s—”

“Emma!” He cut her off, voice urgent. “How long have you even known him? A month? Two weeks? Last time I was back in town I hadn’t even seen him—so what, it can’t have been more than a couple of weeks.”

“So what?” Emma shot back.

“Emma, people aren’t always what they seem, especially men. How can you trust someone you’ve barely known a month?”

She looked at him—so sure of himself, so desperate. A cold laugh slipped out. “And what about you? I’ve known you for twelve years. Did that make you trustworthy?”

“Emma, have I ever lied to you? Haven’t I always treated you well?”

“Treated me well?” Emma let out a humorless laugh. “Theodore, I don’t want to dredge up the past—it’s pointless. Why don’t you ask Cecilia, the day she was kidnapped, whether you were better to her than to me?”

Theodore’s face turned even paler.

“Sorry, but I don’t have time to argue about what’s over. Let’s just meet at city hall.” Emma brushed past him, heading toward the hospital wing.

Theodore ran into her at the hospital at least twice, but never managed to exchange more than a look—just watched her carrying food containers, always flanked by security.

Whenever he pressed Fallon for information, she’d only ever say she didn’t know.

At times, Theodore was infuriated: I’m the one who hired you!

But Fallon would just apologize: “I’m sorry, Mr. Whitman. I have my reasons. I really can’t say.”

Theodore couldn’t bring himself to push any further—especially after getting a text from Emma: Fallon’s salary is on me. Please don’t make things difficult for her anymore.

Staring at the message, Theodore could only let out a bitter laugh.

Five days later, his grandmother was discharged. Theodore had checked the calendar and come to pick her up.

The moment he pulled into the parking lot, he spotted her in the distance—walking out of the hospital, supported on either side by Emma and that man.
