Escape from Mr. Whitman (Emma and Theodore) novel Chapter 349

He felt like an utter fool.

All those questions he’d just asked—just pointless small talk, really.

Larson always looked so polished, almost scholarly with those gold-rimmed glasses, but beneath the veneer, he had a razor-sharp sense of loyalty and grudge. As far as he was concerned, Emma’s parents were already written off, long past any hope of reconciliation. Why would he bother with pleasantries?

Theodore had heard the rumors: Emma’s parents were in the county jail, refusing to post bail even when someone tried to help them out.

He’d also heard why. Apparently, it was safer inside than out. If they walked free, Larson would make sure their lives became a living hell.

And with Larson’s methods, he’d make them pay without leaving a single trace—because he was Young Rossi.

How had Young Rossi, so young himself, managed to carve out a ruthless path through that sprawling, powerful family and become the head of it all? The story was practically legend.

What Theodore hadn’t expected was that Larson was Young Rossi.

A bitter smile touched Theodore’s lips.

He didn’t know what was wrong with him lately. Everything had a bitter aftertaste.

The food he ate tasted bitter, even the water seemed unpleasant, and the very air felt tinged with a faint bitterness.

That afternoon, Hanley dropped by his office, suggesting they get dinner together. Jared and Cecilia Chambers would be coming too.

Sitting behind his desk, Theodore felt a wave of emptiness. “I’ll pass. I’m exhausted, really. You guys go ahead. Dinner’s on me.”

“Theo…” Hanley protested, “Do you really think I can’t afford a meal? I just thought you seemed down these days, and maybe hanging out with the guys would cheer you up.”

Theodore shook his head. “I’m not up for crowds tonight. Seriously, go on without me.”
