“Sienna… I was almost too late… just a little bit later…” His voice was hoarse and tight. “I almost… failed to protect you.”
Those last words seemed to catch in his throat, carrying a fragile, almost broken quality.
The intensity of his emotion, so strong it made Sienna’s heart flutter faintly, wrapped around her like a tangible force.
That warmth flooded her, washing over her usually calm and undisturbed heart.
Her hands, which had been raised to push him away, slowly dropped back to her sides. In the end, she didn’t push him away.
She lifted her gaze to meet his beautiful eyes, which were swirling with turbulent waves.
His eyes were full of worry and lingering fear.
Sienna pressed her lips together, a flicker of complexity crossing her bright eyes. Her voice was warm as she said, “I’m fine. They’re just a bunch of nobodies. Even if you hadn’t come, they couldn’t have hurt me.”
“So, does that mean I shouldn’t have come after all?” His voice was muffled against her, and he tightened his arms around her.
He buried his face deeper into the delicate curve of her neck.
His warm breath tickled her skin.
She shrank her neck back slightly. “That’s not what I meant…”
“Sienna.” Mason’s voice was still husky as he said her name. His large hand remained resting lightly on her waist, as if afraid she might vanish. “Don’t take risks like that alone anymore.”
Sienna didn’t respond, nor did she argue.
She let him hold her.
The scent of pine and smoke filling her senses was also unsettling her composure.
She had no idea how much time had passed.
Eventually, Sienna’s arms started to feel numb from being held for so long. “Have you held me long enough?”
“Of course, I could never hold you long enough.” His breathing had gradually calmed, and the tension was gone from his voice.
Although he said that, he was still worried about making her uncomfortable, so he let her go.
Sienna shot him a glance and immediately stepped back, putting distance between them. Only then did she

raise a hand to smooth her clothes, covering the exposed strip of incredibly fair skin at her waist.
Mason’s gaze swept over the scattered, groaning figures around them.
The faint smell of blood hung in the air.
He grabbed his phone and made a quick call. “West Ring Road, location is… Ambushed by Retorchi forces from Plesia. Seven individuals, all subdued. Send a team to clean up immediately. Take all survivors into custody. Interrogate them at the highest clearance level.”
After hanging up, he looked at Sienna. “I’ll take you home after my people get here.”
Sienna pointed at the Ghost parked nearby.
Mason said, “My people will return the Ghost to Sophie.”
Sienna shrugged, offering no further refusal.
The Ministry of National Defense team arrived incredibly fast.
It was barely ten minutes before they arrived.
A squad sped onto the scene and took charge of the remaining Retorchi thugs.
Sienna got into the car with Mason.
She reached for the seatbelt, but he suddenly caught her wrist.
“Don’t move.” Mason frowned slightly, drawing her hand towards him.
On the back of her hand, a shallow scrape was slowly seeping blood.
With that blood spreading over it, her hand looked almost jarring to look at.
Mason’s pupils constricted slightly.
Sienna also noticed the cut on her hand. She showed little reaction and tried to pull her hand back. “It’s nothing. Just a scratch.”
Mason’s eyes clouded with worry, his gaze growing heavy.
He released Sienna’s hand, then leaned in close and buckled her seatbelt for her.
The way he leaned in–so close, at that particular angle–pulled Sienna right into his orbit, making her hyper–aware of him.
That smoky pine scent wrapped around her again.
As he leaned in, his shirt collar hung loose, revealing a stretch of smooth collarbone.
Just above it, his Adam’s apple looked so temptingly refined, so dangerously sexy.

It was just begging for her to leave her mark on it.
:.
Sienna suddenly found her throat dry, and being this close to him was just overwhelming.
Even her usually icy–cool face was tinged with a rosy blush.
She quickly looked away.

She didn’t see the profound depth in his downcast eyes, their long lashes framing a gaze that held only her reflection.
Once the seatbelt was fastened, he started the engine. “Sit tight.”
The black Maybach shot down the lane.
Before they knew it, Mason pulled up right in front of a 24–hour pharmacy.
Sienna never paid much attention to minor injuries like this. “It’s not necessary. Let’s just go…”
Mason gave her a pointed look, eyes fixed on that bloody mess. “Are you sure you want to go back like this? What will your parents think if they see it?”
Sienna fell silent instantly.
If her parents saw her like this, they’d totally freak out.
They’d probably force her to stay in bed and rest until her hand was completely healed.
“Wait here,” Mason said. Seeing Sienna with her head hung low, he couldn’t help but think how unexpectedly cute she looked right then–almost like she was trying to behave herself.
His thin lips curved into a slight smile.
He ducked into the pharmacy and was back in just a minute.
Sienna reached out for the pharmacy bag.
But Mason reached out his hand to her. “Let me see your hand.”
Sienna looked at him, didn’t refuse, and placed her hand in his palm.
His movements were very gentle as he carefully held her hand, positioning it between them.
The car’s interior light was soft.
He took out the supplies, lowered his gaze, and began carefully cleaning the cut on the back of her hand.
His touch was so light, as if handling a priceless treasure.
Sienna blinked, staring at his lowered dark lashes. His devastatingly handsome face looked almost reverent, his expression utterly focused.
