The scene changed again. It was late at night, and the countryside was completely silent.
Once she had calmed down, young Sienna tiptoed down the hall carrying a glass of milk, heading to Melvin and Hazel’s room. She remembered that Hazel loved drinking it.
Sienna thought, ‘Maybe if Mom has some milk, she’ll be in a better mood and won’t be so angry with me. Maybe she’ll even smile at me… Maybe she won’t hate me as much this time.’
But just as she reached the door, she heard her parents arguing through the crack. “Ugh, I’ve had enough! If she hadn’t used Mom to guilt–trip us into coming back, I could’ve been meeting someone important tonight -someone who could’ve helped us get in with the Hanson family and all their connections. Do you know how much easier things would be for us if we pulled that off?” Hazel snapped, her voice sharp with irritation.
“Hey, relax. Mom was just worried about Sienna getting hurt…” Melvin tried to calm her down.
“Hurt? Are you kidding me? She’s totally pretending! How can she be so manipulative at such a young age? She made Mom call us on purpose, just so we’d have to drop everything and race back!” Hazel fumed even harder. “And you–you are about to seal that major deal today, one that could’ve opened so many doors for us! Thanks to her stupid phone call, now it’s all ruined!
“She’s nothing but a jinx! Whenever she’s involved, nothing good ever happens!”
Melvin let out a helpless sigh. “Listen, Mom’s holding on to 35% of the company’s original shares. Dad literally pushed them into her hands before he passed.”
Hazel snorted. “If it weren’t for those shares, do you think I’d be stuck dealing with all this mess out here?”
Melvin tried to calm her down. “Those shares are the backbone of the Fairbank Group. You know how much Mom dotes on Sienna… She’s most likely planning to leave those shares to Sienna in the future. So just treat Sienna a little better. If nothing else, do it for the shares–keep Mom on our side.”
“Give them to her? Why?” Hazel snapped, her voice rising. “She’s just a worthless girl, always a drain on us! What right does she have to get so much? Has Mom lost her mind?”
Hazel sprang to her feet, her anger boiling over. “Melvin, you’re the Fairbank family’s only son! And we have four sons ourselves! Even when it comes to inheritance, how could Sienna–a girl–have any claim? What is that old hag thinking, hoarding those shares and wanting to pass them to Sienna? Every time I see Sienna, I just get furious…”
Clatter! Sienna froze as if struck by lightning. The glass slipped from her trembling fingers and shattered on the floor, milk splattering everywhere and soaking her bandaged hand.
The shouting from inside the room stopped abruptly. “Who’s there?” Hazel barked, her footsteps echoing as she hurried toward the door.
The door was yanked open, but outside, there was no sign of anyone–only chaos: broken glass and spilled milk scattered across the floor. It was clear someone had fled in a hurry.
The scene blurred and shifted once more, then finally settled on a cold hospital bed. The sharp scent of

Zea was nothing but skin and bones, her face as pale as death, like a candle burned down to the wick. She lay on the bed; each breath was a struggle.
Sixteen–year–old Sienna set her acupuncture kit aside and held Zea’s hand tightly. Nearby, a phone screen glowed, showing countless outgoing calls–Sienna had tried repeatedly to reach Melvin and Hazel, dialing their numbers over and over. No matter how many times she tried, she just couldn’t get through.
Sienna’s eyes were red–rimmed as she clung tightly to Zea’s hand, her voice trembling with tears. “Grandma, please don’t fall asleep… I can save you. I’ve spent so many years studying medicine–I really can save you… I promise, I will save you…”
Zea forced her eyes open and looked at her granddaughter–Sienna was crying uncontrollably. In Zea’s gaze, her love was so deep it almost caused pain, and she couldn’t bear to say goodbye. She tried to raise her hand to stroke Sienna’s cheek, but had no strength left.
All she could do was force a faint smile, her voice barely holding on. “You silly girl… Grandma’s candle burned out. My organs are just failing. There won’t be any miracle. There’s nothing anyone can do now…”
She looked at Sienna, her eyes full of love. “Honestly, I owe everything to you–all those needles and medicines you made for me. I’ve only lived this long because of you. These extra years have been borrowed time, just so I could be here with you… Watching you grow into such an exceptional young woman–I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
Sienna quickly took Zea’s hand and pressed it gently to her face. Zea let out a shaky breath, her fingers softly tracing the tears on Sienna’s cheeks. “Sienna, you’re always the one I think about most…
“Listen to Grandma… When you return to the Fairbank family, don’t let anyone mistreat you, okay?”
She continued, “Your mom has never liked me, and that’s probably why she struggles to care for you as well.
better.” But that’s not your fault, sweetheart. Maybe after I’m gone, she’ll find it in her heart to treat you
Zea rested for a long moment, eyes closed, before continuing softly, “Promise me, if you ever feel hurt or pushed aside in that house, don’t force yourself to hang on just because they’re family. What matters most to me is that you’re happy. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to see…”
With great effort, she pulled out a carefully wrapped bundle from beneath her pillow and handed it to Sienna, her bony fingers gripping Sienna’s hand tightly. Her eyes were clear and filled with resolve–the last flicker of determination. “Promise me–this is all Grandma has left for you. Keep it safe, and never let your
else… parents take it away. It’s only for you, Sienna–don’t give it to anyone
“No matter how much your parents try to force you, this is yours and yours alone. As long as you hold on to it, even if you have to leave the Fairbank family someday, you’ll still be able to live your own life, completely on your own.”
“Grandma…” Sienna choked out, her voice trembling. She watched as the gentle, frail woman before her finally closed her eyes and slipped away quietly–still present in that moment. Zea’s last gaze stayed on Sienna, filled with love and a deep worry that seemed impossible to let go of.
