Chapter 32
Countless lines of intricate code scrolled endlessly across the screen, mixed with dizzying formulas and architecture diagrams that split and reformed at lightning speed.
Even Theo, who’d weathered his share of crises, couldn’t help but feel his pupils narrow. Behind his glasses, those normally gentle eyes flashed with a sharp, startled edge.
As the heir to the Cooper family, he was no slouch when it came to data and algorithms.
But staring at this code-packed screen right now? It plunged into territory way beyond his expertise.
He could only pick out that it involved some high-level isolation and cleanup, along with an advanced module fix. This… was leagues above what your typical IT engineer could pull off.
The ghostly blue light played across Sienna’s refined profile. Her face was calm and intensely focused, her fingers flying in a blur, radiating complete command over the chaos.
Theo observed Sienna for a few seconds before quietly backing out, gently pulling the door closed behind
him.
Time blurred by-who knew how long. Sienna finally mended a key module.
With the damaged data stream on the screen now temporarily contained and isolated, she leaned back lazily in her chair, her frazzled nerves easing up at last.
She shut her eyes for a second, raising a hand to rub her aching temples.
Idly, she reached for the nearby milk and took a sip; its warmth melted away a bit of her fatigue.
She paused, eyes fluttering open to gaze blankly at the cup in her hand.
It had been kept at the perfect temperature, warmed to the side. No wonder it was just right.
As she thought back to Theo’s quiet departure earlier, an unfamiliar warmth spread through Sienna’s chest.
Her lips curved into a subtle smile as she grabbed the pastries, popping them one by one, then downed the rest of the milk.
Recharged, she shifted her focus back to the screen and jumped right back into the work.
Dawn broke fully.
Sienna completed the initial emergency repairs at last, stabilizing things for the moment.
Her eyes showed a hint of weariness, but she wasn’t about to rest.
She got up, hopped in the shower to rinse off the exhaustion, then stuffed the laptop into her canvas bag.
The bag-stuffed with vital data from a top-secret national project-dangled casually over her shoulder.
As she reached the bottom of the stairs, bursts of praise and lively chatter drifted in from the living room.
“Oh, Amanda is just incredible!”
“Keep at it-work hard to become Professor Sharp’s student soon, and your future will be limitless.”
“Make sure to proofread that paper a couple more times before submitting.”
Amanda was dressed to impress in a custom skirt suit, her long hair neatly pinned up, makeup on point-the perfect image of a graceful socialite.
She held a thick manuscript in her hands, sitting with poised elegance on the sofa.
Gerard and Pansy sat across from her on the opposite couch, their faces beaming with pride.
“Dad, Mom, you’re too kind,” Amanda replied, her delicate features lit by a confident, assured smile. “I’ve compiled all the experimental data for my thesis. Today, I’m planning to drop by Professor Sharp’s office, test the waters, and hopefully ace the final review to join his lab as a student.”
Her words came out modest, but her eyes gleamed with unchecked smugness. This was her chance to showcase her worth to the family.
Especially as she spotted Sienna descending the stairs out of the corner of her eye-the edge of her mouth curled into a subtly malicious smirk.
She rose quickly, flashing a bright, welcoming smile as she moved toward Sienna, even extending a hand to take the canvas bag from her shoulder. “Sienna, heading out too? Where to? I’m off to see Professor Sharp- want to come along?”
She hesitated for a beat, then hurried into an explanation with feigned regret. “Oh, you might not know who Professor Sharp is. He’s the absolute authority in our country’s field of computer systems engineering and data security-a professor at the country’s top university, Disey University. He’s practically a national icon.”
She played the part perfectly: the helpful older sister patiently enlightening her sheltered sibling.
Sienna sidestepped just enough to evade her grasp, her voice cool and even. “No need.”
Amanda’s smile stiffened briefly, but she rallied with extra warmth, her eyes curving into crescents. “Professor Sharp is truly exceptional. Learning even a little from him could change everything! Tell you what, Sienna… I’ll mention you to him and try to score you an audit spot in one of his classes. Who knows? After sitting in, you might catch the bug and want to dive into studies yourself.”
Sienna didn’t break stride, sweeping right past her with a tone that was aloof and indifferent. “No thanks. Just mind your own business.”
