Sure enough, Patrick’s slight frown relaxed as he turned to Sienna. “Your sister?”

Sienna didn’t even bat an eye, her voice totally flat. “Not really.”

“Oh.” That response made it abundantly clear to Patrick that Sienna wanted nothing to do with Amanda.

His attitude toward Amanda, which had just begun to warm up, went cold once more.

Amanda’s heart sank along with it, and she shot Sienna a resentful glare.

She thought, ‘I’ve lowered myself to recognize this country bumpkin as my sister, and Sienna has the nerve to dismiss it outright?

‘Sienna is clearly out to humiliate me in front of Professor Sharp, deliberately sabotaging my chance to become his student! Jealousy at its finest, right? I just can’t fathom it… why on earth did Professor Sharp treat Sienna so differently?’

Amanda hugged her stack of research papers tightly, feeling awkward as she teetered on the edge of speaking.

Then, a piercing scream-like a pig being slaughtered-ripped through the air.

She snapped her head toward the sound.

A squad of guards was dragging a hefty guy toward another exit. He was still howling at the top of his lungs.

Mid-wail, he spotted the group standing there and bellowed desperately, “Professor Sharp! I swear, I know I screwed up-don’t take me in! Don’t take me in!

“Sienna… Sienna! I’m sorry—I was wrong! Please, put in a good word with Professor Sharp for me!”

Amanda’s face paled a little more. She thought, ‘That man… He has to be institute staff. And he is begging

Sienna?’

Soon enough, the guards hauled the fat man off.

Through it all, Sienna’s face remained impassive, as if neither Amanda nor the guy who’d just been there even

crossed her mind.

She casually slung her canvas bag over her shoulder and said flatly, “I’m off.”

Patrick nodded. “Alright-head home safe and get some rest. You put in a solid day’s work; I’ll take care of the follow-up.”

He completely overlooked Amanda off to the side, her face ashen and rigid.

Sienna murmured a quiet “Sure,” not sparing Amanda so much as a glance, and walked away.

“Professor Sharp…” Amanda clutched her papers harder, ready to give it another shot.

Patrick brushed her off with a wave. “It’s getting late-you should head home and rest too, Amanda.”

With that, he clasped his hands behind his back and ambled back into the institute.

Amanda took a few reluctant steps after him, calling out “Professor Sharp” again, but she got no answer and could only watch helplessly as he vanished from sight.

Mulling over Patrick-whom she revered like a god-and his fawning over Sienna, not to mention the way that fat guy had groveled and pleaded with her…

Amanda couldn’t hold it in any longer. She spun on her heel and rushed after Sienna.

“Sienna!” she shouted as she pursued.

But the slender, tall silhouette didn’t slow down one bit.

Fuming, Amanda gritted her teeth, quickened her stride, and jogged ahead to block the path, flinging out an arm to stop her.

“Sienna, how the hell do you know Professor Sharp?” Her eyes brimmed with undisguised frustration and doubt. “Why do you have access to the institute? Who… who are you, really?”

Sienna finally halted. Under the cool moonlight, Sienna’s strikingly vibrant features grew even more aloof, like a deity graced by the moon’s glow.

As she subtly lifted her gaze, her clear eyes betrayed no feeling, yet when they locked onto Amanda, they delivered a… heart-pounding wave of intimidation.

Under that piercing stare, Amanda pressed a hand to her chest, her breath hitching a bit, but she refused to let Sienna rattle her. Chin up, she pushed back, “If you know Professor Sharp, why didn’t you just come out and say it this morning? You knew how crucial this paper is for me, you…”

“Amanda.” Sienna’s voice stayed cool and even. “Your stuff’s none of my business.”

The subtext was obvious: her own matters were off-limits too-mind your own.

Amanda faltered. “We’re family now, aren’t we…?” She forced the words out, laced with grudging resentment.

Sienna raised an eyebrow just a touch and got right to it. “Twenty years? That’s enough time to get attached to a dog. So if you keep Mom and Dad smiling, I won’t mind them keeping you as their little plaything.”

Amanda’s expression soured in an instant. She thought, ‘Is this bitch seriously comparing me to a dog? Acting like my parents were just indulging some entertaining pet.’

The insult stung deep.

“If you want things to stay peaceful, ditch those petty plots, zip it, and just be the adorable little diversion at home,” Sienna said.

Sienna leaned in close to her ear, her tone turning ice-cold and heavy. “Consider this your final warning— otherwise… twenty years won’t be enough to bail you out. I’ve got limited patience. Capisce?”

The frosty words stabbed into Amanda’s car like shards of ice.

Sienna didn’t spare a glance for her paling face or the way her body tectered. She stepped right past and kept walking, no looking back.
