Chapter 43
Sienna emerged from the heavily fortified security area, heading toward the garage where she’d left her car at the institute.
A familiar black Maybach glided out of the shadows of the night.
She stopped in her tracks.
The car eased to a smooth halt right in front of her.
Mason pushed open the door, his face looking even more devilishly handsome and roguish under the pale moonlight.
His eyes, dark as polished obsidian, twinkled with mischief. “Get in.”
Sienna locked eyes with him for a beat before ducking inside.
The car purred to life and melted into the darkness.
The cabin was just the right temperature. A calming cedar aroma hung in the air, soothing her nerves.
Sienna let her eyelids droop a fraction, sinking back into the seat as fatigue finally etched faint lines across her face.
“Tuckered out?” Mason shot her a sidelong glance, his deep, velvety voice gaining an extra seductive edge in the intimate quiet. “How about we grab something to eat?”
She kept her eyes shut, her voice turning lazy, shedding its typical cool edge. “Pass-just take me home. Grandpa’s acupuncture is first thing tomorrow.”
“Acupuncture?” Mason quirked a brow, like a puzzle piece had fallen into place, his grin widening as he eyed her. “This the part where I say, ‘Woman, what else you got hidden up there? You’re a jack-of-all-trades, aren’t you?””
His laid-back tone rolled out low and husky, utterly mesmerizing.
The playful cadence wrapped around her like a caress, pulling straight from her ear to her pulse.
Sienna murmured a nonchalant “Yeah,” laced with bold confidence and a hint of swagger.
Mason burst into laughter, his chest vibrating as the sound turned even more relaxed and magnetic.
Staring at her vividly striking features, he couldn’t resist the impulse to… tease her a little.
The sly curl of his slim lips deepened. “Well… our versatile Miss Cooper might be unaware, but our families set up a childhood betrothal once upon a time.”
Sienna’s
eyes flew
flew open, zeroing in on him.
His smile stretched wider, dragging the words out teasingly. “So technically speaking… you’re my fiancée.”
Sienna was confused, thinking, ‘When the hell have I saved his life?’
“Not buying it?” Mason’s eyes crinkled, his alluring peach-blossom gaze growing more enchanting and flirtatious. “Ask Rolf yourself when you’re home.”
Honestly, the elders on both sides had brought it up before, but he’d brushed it off-couldn’t stomach Amanda’s fake charm.
It only resurfaced… When he first spotted her at the hospital, saving Sophie and discovering she was the true. Cooper family daughter.
That old engagement had surged back into his thoughts.
Sienna mulled it over for a couple of seconds before replying, “What era are we in? That crap doesn’t fly anymore.”
“But…” He drew out the syllable once more, his lazy, resonant voice threaded with easygoing humor, completely captivating. “If it’s with you, a touch of that crap could work.”
Sienna said, “…Are you flirting with me?”
Mason gave her a look that said “duh.” “I thought I was making it crystal clear.”
Sienna was speechless. It was precisely because it was so obvious that it seemed strange.
They’d barely known each other for 24 hours, after all. Dropping “like”? Total BS.
Mason picked up on her skepticism, his mesmerizing eyes turning more wicked, his low, lazy drawl oozing even more charm. “Call it love at first sight?
“Or maybe, since you saved my life… I should repay the favor with my hand in marriage?”
Sienna was confused, thinking, ‘When the hell have I saved his life?’

They rolled up to the Cooper family villa around 1 a.m.
The main hall lights were still burning bright.
Sienna had barely walked in the door when the entire family descended on her.
“Sienna, you’re back at last!” Pansy seized her hand, her face full of worry. “What kept you so late? You must be wiped out!”
Sienna’s eyes softened with warmth, though she couldn’t help feeling a touch exasperated. “Didn’t I call and tell you I’d be running late, and to go ahead and rest?”
“We’re fine-not sleepy at all.” Gerard gave her a quick head-to-toe scan, his tense expression easing only after

confirming she was okay.
Theo pushed up his glasses, his gaze kind as he said gently, “Sienna, you put in a long day. Just glad you’re
home safe.”
Sienna’s exasperation deepened. “If you all keep pulling stunts like this, I’ll have no choice but to hustle more and wrap things up earlier next time.”
As she spoke, her eyes drifted past the group to Rolf in his wheelchair, visibly drained but mustering some
energy.
She put on a stern look. “You especially, Grandpa-up this late? Those two days of herbal baths were pointless. Tomorrow’s acupuncture won’t work if you’re this run-down.”
Rolf’s tired eyes suddenly sparkled with excitement as he fixed them on Sienna. “Sienna-tomorrow… I finally get the treatment?”
Ever since Sienna decided to start the acupuncture, she’d prescribed herbal baths to prep him—about three rounds, and they’d be good to go.
“If you don’t hit the sack right now, we’ll bump it another day,” Sienna said, keeping her face straight as she stared him down.
“I’m going-right this second!” Rolf clutched the wheelchair arms, craning his neck to holler, “Eden, hurry! Wheel me to my room-I’m crashing now!”
Eden hid a smile as he stepped up to push Rolf out.
