Forsaken Until My Last Breath novel Chapter 18

Chapter 18

Rebecca opened her eyes, looked at the familiar face by the bed, parted her lips, and called out hoarsely. “Dr. Frank.”

Frank, standing before the bed, wore a gentle expression with a flicker of excitement in his eyes as he said urgently. “You’re finally awake. Would you like something to cat?”

Rebecca shook her head. That simple movement seemed to drain all her strength as she murmured softly, “Not hun- gry, thank you.”

Frank pulled over a chair, sat down, took out his stethoscope, and began a careful examination.

Half an hour later, Frank packed his things and smiled slightly.

“Looking good. Two more days of rest and you’ll recover.”

Rebecca let out a soft laugh. “That’s good news. Thank you, Dr. Frank.”

Seeing Frank prepare to leave, Rebecca hesitated before asking, “Dr. Frank, Vincent didn’t cause you trouble, did he?”

Frank’s expression froze momentarily before curving into a smile.

“No, don’t worry. He wouldn’t dare touch me.”

Not a word about the punches from Vincent or the three months’ salary docked.

Some people and things weren’t worth mentioning.

That day, Frank had sensed something terribly wrong with Rebecca’s condition. Turning back midway, he’d arrived just in time to save her from the slit wrists.

At Rebecca’s pleading, the two staged a fake death to deceive Vincent and brought her back to his hometown to recu-

perate.

Rebecca felt conflicted about Frank-he had no ties to her, yet repeatedly offered help…

Still physically weak and mentally overwhelmed, Rebecca soon grew weary. She turned over and fell back asleep.

After Frank returned to work at the hospital, he hired a nanny specifically for Rebecca, ensuring her daily care was meticulous.

Once nearly recovered, Rebecca informed Frank in advance of her plan to travel.

After a long time, Frank replied with a single word: “Okay,” but insisted on seeing her off.

Having already burdened Frank too much, Rebecca planned to obediently wait for his return before departing.

Two weeks later, Frank returned-with luggage in tow.

Assuming he was taking leave to recuperate at home, Rebecca didn’t inquire further.

On the day Rebecca prepared to leave, she blinked at Frank wheeling his suitcase out.

“Dr. Frank, you’re…?”

Instead of answering, Frank asked, “Miss Rebecca, where are you headed?”

Rebecca looked away, deciding to conceal her true destination.

“I want to travel around.”

Frank met her gaze unflinchingly. “After all these years working, I’m tired too. I’d like to travel as well. Why not go together?”

Rebecca was taken aback. Before she could respond, Frank continued, “I have some idea what you’re planning. But if your health fails on the road, no one can save you. With me along, that worry disappears.”

As Frank finished speaking, Rebecca opened her mouth only to find no argument left.

She looked Frank in the eye, her expression turning serious.
