Forsaken Until My Last Breath novel Chapter 9

Chapter 9

Vincent took Susan to see the doctor in a hurry, leaving Rebecca and Patrick alone.

Patrick crouched down to wipe the tears from Rebecca’s eyes, making comforting sounds as he urgently tried to

soothe her.

Rebecca tightly hugged the anxious-looking Patrick, burying her head in his shoulder, and said softly, “Aunt is fine, Patrick. Don’t worry. Thank you for protecting me.’

Three days later, after Nicole and Michael’s funeral arrangements were completed, Rebecca returned to Spring Har- mony Villa to get her things.

Vincent, who hadn’t been back for a long time, arrived with a makeup artist and a stylist.

Catching sight of Rebecca packing her clothes, his gaze paused for a moment.

He had only learned about Nicole and Michael’s deaths in the past couple of days, and now understood why Rebecca had lost control of her emotions that day..

Vincent looked at the empty house, a flicker of guilt crossing his face, and said slowly, “I’ll find you another nanny.”

Rebecca acted as if she hadn’t heard, busying herself with her own tasks.

Vincent was irritated by Rebecca’s attitude and said coldly, “It’s just a dead nanny, isn’t it? What are you making such a fuss about? How dare you lay a hand on Susan! There’s a banquet tonight. You’re coming with me!”

Rebecca was pushed around by the stylist and makeup artist as they worked on her.

Dressed in her finery, Rebecca looked so stunning that Vincent couldn’t help but be momentarily dazzled.

Along the way, he tried to make amends, but Rebecca treated him like air, offering no response whatsoever.

Vincent’s face darkened as he fell silent, the atmosphere between them instantly freezing solid.

At the charity gala, socialites from all circles had gathered. Vincent exchanged pleasantries with business partners.

Rebecca’s phone rang. Vincent glanced over-Dr. Frank was calling.

Watching Rebecca walk away to answer, his expression turned icy, eyes blazing with fury.

Rebecca stepped onto the secluded balcony. “Dr. Frank, what is it?”

After a heavy pause, Frank reluctantly said, “Patrick’s gone.”

Rebecca clenched the phone, her mind going blank.

She’d heard every word clearly. It had to be her ears playing tricks-how could Patrick be gone?

She hung up and bolted downstairs in a frantic rush.

Still mingling, Vincent saw Rebecca fleeing without a backward glance. Enraged, he crushed his glass, startling near- by partners.

Slowly cleaning the shards, he accepted a sanitized towel from a waiter to wipe away the spilled wine.

Masking his fury with a practiced smile, Vincent nodded, “My apologies, Alexander Wilson. Please continue.”

Rebecca sped all the way. The moment her car stopped, she shoved the door open and stumbled out. She’d been run- ning so frantically that she fell midway.

“Angela! Patrick!”

Rebecca’s voice trembled, thick with tears as she screamed.

She threw the door open, then froze-the sight before her stole her breath.

Angela, always poised and dignified, sat on the floor clutching Patrick’s limp body, broken down in sobs.

“Angela, how could this happen!”

Rebecca collapsed beside them, trembling uncontrollably as she touched Patrick’s lifeless face. Frank’s eyes darkened with sorrow.

“Vincent’s people said Patrick had hurt Susan,” he stated gravely. “That he caused her nightmares every night… that he needed to pay.”

He paused, unable to continue, his face etched with pain.

Frank had been volunteering at Patrick’s new school when he found the boy-already beyond help.

The perpetrators were caught immediately, but they refused to implicate Vincent.

Seeing Angela’s shattered state when she came to claim the body, Frank insisted on driving her home and contacted Rebecca.

Angela wept for a long while before gently kissing Patrick’s forehead.

“My Patrick was so particular about cleanliness,” she murmured softly. “I’ll change his clothes.”

Rebecca quickly stood up, following a few steps as she cried out, “Angela…”

Angela carefully cradled Patrick, moving slowly forward. At the staircase, she glanced back at Rebecca and said soft- ly, “Rebecca, pour Dr. Frank a glass of water. He’s worked so hard all this time.”

The moment Angela went upstairs, Rebecca covered her mouth, weeping silently.

Soon, a loud thud echoed from above-like a stool crashing to the floor.

Rebecca’s heart clenched. “Angela?” she called out sharply. No response came from upstairs.

Suddenly remembering Nicole, Rebecca dashed up the stairs, her voice breaking with grief as she shouted, “Angela!”

Dr. Frank’s expression shifted instantly as he sprinted after her.

Pushing the door open, the sight inside left them both stunned.
