From a Wrong Turn to Mr. Right novel Chapter 226

Lavinia Bennett’s eyes darkened, narrowing as she let out a slow breath. “Then let’s just make sure he never finds out,” she said, voice low.

Carmen Gates looked up, worry etched deeply across her face. She struggled for words. “But today we already—”

“What about today?” Lavinia cut her off, her tone sharp. “Olivia’s never been fond of us anyway. If Dad ever asks, we’ll just say her attitude hasn’t changed a bit. It’s not like he’ll go ask Olivia himself.”

She let out a short, bitter laugh. “Honestly, this just means we don’t have to keep sucking up to her anymore. I’ve had enough of that nonsense.”

Carmen’s face scrunched up in worry, but she knew Lavinia was right. After today, there was no turning back. She chewed on her lip and finally sighed, resigned. “Guess we don’t have much choice.”

Lavinia reached over and squeezed her hand. “It’s fine, Mom. We never got anywhere with her anyway—so what’s there to lose? And honestly, do you really think Olivia’s going to last with Ethan Carter forever?”

Carmen glanced at her, saying nothing.

Lavinia shrugged, her tone dismissive. “Today was a mess, sure, but I wasn’t wrong. Olivia’s got nothing going for her. Ethan’s interested now, but when that fades? There’ll be another Aileen soon enough.”

“Better to stop bending over backwards for her before it’s all for nothing. No more walking on eggshells, no more groveling.”

Carmen mulled it over and finally nodded, sighing. “You’re right. Let’s just leave it.”

Lavinia nodded, patting her hand. “But Mom, whatever you do, don’t let anything slip. If Dad asks, stick to the story: Olivia just won’t give us the time of day.”

Carmen rolled her eyes. “I know, I know.”

A deep male voice suddenly cut through the room. “Know what?”

Both women froze. Turning toward the doorway, they saw Mason Bennett strolling in, calm and easygoing—the kind of expression that said he’d only caught the end of their conversation.
