Olivia Bennett couldn’t calm down either. She glanced at him and managed a soft, “Yeah.”
Damian Franklin’s face lit up immediately, a grin spreading across his features.
Ethan Carter led Olivia gently to the couch and sat her down. “Let me get you a glass of water,” he offered.
She’d been crying for so long—her throat must be raw.
“I’ll get it,” Damian jumped up before Ethan could move.
He poured a glass of water and handed it to Olivia with a warm, fatherly smile.
Olivia accepted it, murmuring, “Thanks.”
Damian’s eyes softened. “No need to thank me.”
Her dark eyes flickered as she took a small sip.
Lance Carter glanced around at them, then stood. “I’ll head home for now. Ethan, stay here with Olivia. When Beatty wakes up, you two can come back together.”
Ethan nodded, shooting Olivia a reassuring look. “Got it.”
The hospital room fell quiet.
Damian watched Olivia, her eyes still rimmed red from crying, and guilt twisted in his chest. “Olivia, are you feeling okay?”
She shook her head, staring down at the little silver locket in her hands. “This…”
“It’s yours,” Damian said, voice gentle, lips curling into a wistful smile. There was a wetness at the corner of his eyes. “It’s been so many years, but finally, it’s back where it belongs.”
A strange ache gripped Olivia’s heart. She hesitated, then nodded, eyes lowered. “Then… I’ll keep it.”
