Catherine Blair’s lips twisted into a wry smile. “She’s not wrong, you know. I’ve always wanted to marry Ethan Carter. And now, since things are already this far gone, why not just go for it? If I get involved with Ethan, why would we ever need to suck up to her again?”

She fixed Addie David with a sharp, sarcastic look. “Don’t you get it yet? Shirley Carter’s a lost cause. To her, we’re nothing.”

“When Daisy Dale liked me, Shirley was happy to pretend we mattered. But now? We’re lower than the trash on the sidewalk to her.”

Every time Shirley opened her mouth, it was just to tell them to get lost. From the moment she walked in, she hadn’t spared them a real glance. It was like they weren’t even in the room.

Addie David’s face flushed in humiliation.

Of course she noticed. But it’s not like she could afford to cross Shirley Carter. All she could do was curse her out behind her back and paste on a smile when she saw her in person.

Catherine gave a little smirk, eyes glittering with determination. “So why keep crawling after her? Why not try a different path? Ethan Carter is a much better catch anyway.”

If Catherine really could catch Ethan Carter’s attention, Addie would be all for it.

Still, she frowned, uncertainty written across her face. “Ethan Carter isn’t easy to win over.”

If he was, he wouldn’t have stayed scandal-free all these years.

“You don’t know until you try,” Catherine replied. “He’s seen me before, he remembers me. If I can just find a way to bump into him again, who knows? Life’s a gamble—might as well bet on the better odds.”

Addie still hesitated. “But…”

Catherine leaned in, meeting her eyes. “So what’s it gonna be? Follow Shirley’s orders and pick a fight with Adelina Lane, or try our luck with Ethan Carter?”

Addie didn’t take long to decide. “Let’s go with Ethan Carter.”

Honestly, Shirley had hinted at the same thing. And if they could win Ethan over, there’d be no sense making an enemy out of Adelina Lane. Buttering up to her, with the Carter family behind them, even Shirley couldn’t touch them.
