Tears welled up in her eyes, just like before.
But this time, Lily George showed not a single flicker of sympathy. “It’s not that I’m giving up on you. It’s that you never once treated us like family. I gave you chance after chance, but all you ever did was hurt us even more. Look at yourself—there’s not a hint of regret in you, not even now. I’m just so… disappointed.”
She glanced at Lance Carter, her voice tired as she managed a single word: “Let’s go.”
Lance gently steadied her. “Alright.”
Both of them turned away, their faces equally cold, ready to leave without looking back.
Shirley Carter felt as if something had been ripped right out of her chest, slipping away too fast to catch. She reached for it, but it was already gone.
A wave of helplessness washed over her.
She watched as they took a few steps toward the door, not even pausing, not even once. Her tears finally broke free. She couldn’t hold it in anymore and shouted, “So it’s all my fault, huh? Everything is just my fault?”
If you listened close, you could hear how desperate she sounded.
Lily paused for just a second, but then quickly steeled herself and kept walking, acting as if she hadn’t heard a thing.
Something inside Shirley snapped, like a balloon stretched too thin finally bursting.
She blurted out, not caring anymore, “If it wasn’t for Adelina Lane, I wouldn’t have done any of this! It’s her fault—all of it. She ruined me. She turned me into this, and look at her—she just breezes through life, everyone always on her side, always so nice to her. Why? What makes her so special?
“I just couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t accept it. I wanted her to hurt like I do. Is that so wrong?”
Her voice echoed through the hallway.
Both Lily and Lance stopped at the same time.
