Daisy Dale stared at her, voice trembling. “So tell me… do you like Uncle Lance?”
“I…”
“Don’t lie to me.”
Shirley Carter opened her mouth to deny it, but Daisy’s words cut her off completely.
Daisy already knew.
Her lips twitched into a grimace, one so sad it was almost painful to watch. “So, the reason you hate Adelina… it’s just because she’s with Uncle Lance now, isn’t it? She never actually did anything to you.”
“She did.” Shirley’s voice was suddenly sharp, almost fierce.
Daisy froze, her teary eyes wide and searching.
A flash of resentment passed through Shirley’s eyes. Her grip on Daisy’s arm tightened. “She took everyone I ever cared about. Isn’t that enough? Do you have any idea how awful she is? Ever since she showed up, your Uncle Lance and Grandma only have eyes for her. She gets whatever she wants, and all I ever get is scolded.”
“They used to love me the most. Whatever I wanted, they’d give me. But after Adelina Lane came along, everything changed. It’s her—she must have been talking bad about me, turning Uncle Lance and Grandma against me.”
“She’s not a good person. She’s always playing people against each other, stealing Grandma and Uncle Lance from me… and now she wants to steal you too. Everything I care about, she wants to take. She’s just a spiteful witch who can’t stand to see me happy…”
Shirley’s whole demeanor changed at the mention of Adelina Lane. Her eyes burned with bitterness and desperation.
Daisy winced—her arm was starting to hurt from Shirley’s grip. “Mom, you’re hurting me. Please let go.”
