Her eyes were dark and guarded; it was clear she had no intention of speaking.
Daisy Dale frowned a little, her gaze drifting to Olivia’s red-rimmed eyes. Her heart clenched.
She softened her tone, her voice gentle. “Alright, I won’t ask anymore.”
Shirley Carter’s eyes flickered.
Daisy took two steps forward and wrapped her in a hug. “It’s all in the past now. I promise, I won’t ask again. And I swear, I’ll stay away from Adelina Lane. Mom will let go of what happened before—let’s not go looking for them anymore, okay?”
Shirley let her gaze fall.
Forget what happened? How could she?
Lily George’s words echoed in her mind, sharp and merciless.
For Adelina Lane, the Lanes had been willing to cut her out completely.
If not for Adelina Lane, she never would’ve ended up like this.
Let go? How could she, when every fiber of her being screamed against it?
But Daisy’s soft, pleading voice kept drifting into her ears.
“Mom, you still have me—and Dad. We’ll always be here for you. Let’s just focus on our own lives and forget the rest. Please?”
Shirley’s throat tightened. At Daisy’s gentle “Mom,” she finally managed to whisper, “Okay.”
Daisy’s face lit up, tears streaming down her cheeks.
Shirley gently pulled her in, wiping her tears away. “What are you crying for?”
“I’m just happy,” Daisy sniffled, trying to smile. Her eyes were still pink, making her look heartbreakingly sweet.
Shirley sighed with a mix of exasperation and affection. “Honestly, you’re still such a kid.”
Daisy grinned. “Well, I am still young.”
