“Remy!” Julia was sprawled on the floor, looking so fragile it was almost pitiful.
Remy’s face didn’t flicker, not even a little. His voice was cold. “I warned you. Don’t mess with Avery. She’s my wife. No matter what happens, no matter if she’s right or wrong, I’m always on her side. You did this to yourself. Now deal with it.”
Those words cut right through me, and for a second I thought I might cry.
Every woman wants that kind of loyalty—someone who’ll pick her, no questions asked.
And here I was, finally hearing it for myself… but only after I’d already decided to let him go.
So what was the point anymore?
I was done watching this mess. I grabbed my suitcase and headed for the door, but Remy was faster. He yanked it out of my hand so hard I almost lost my balance.
If this is love, I swear, it might just kill me.
“Remy, enough! I can’t breathe in this toxic house. Every extra second here feels like I’m suffocating. Please, just be human for once. I’m already covered in scars. What do you want, to see me dead before you’ll let me go?”
“No. You’re not leaving.” Remy’s voice was low and stubborn. “Whatever I owe you, I’ll pay it back a hundred times over. But you have to stay.” He dragged my suitcase away, making it clear he wasn’t giving me a choice.
Before I could answer, Cindy’s wailing cut me off.
“Mommy, please don’t go! I need you! This is your home too—you can’t leave!”
Everything spun out of control—again.
Julia really was a storm. Ever since she showed up, nothing was the same. All of us were falling apart.
Cindy wrapped herself around my leg, her tiny body shaking as she sobbed, begging me not to leave.
Remy wouldn’t let go of my wrist, his face dark, those eyes full of something wild and desperate.
